I'm not sure it's a good idea to read all five books in a series just before watching the pilot for their small-screen adaptation. It kind of leaves you feeling a bit too immersed in a fictional world. And it tends to encourage the kind of silly "That's not how it happens in the book!" exclamations you'd expect coming from our fanboy brethren over at Splash Page (no offense, guys).
But last night I sacrificed myself for you, dear readers, and watched the first episode of the CW's "Vampire Diaries," based on the novels by L.J. Smith (which I discussed in this week's Book Report).
SPOILER ALERT! After the jump, details on the "VD" season premiere. Read more...

There are certain moments in movie history where the plot, the music, and the moral of the story all combined just cause a total blabber breakdown! When I first watched the trailer for "My Sister’s Keeper," I was sitting in the MTV newsroom and found myself holding back little sobs while trying to avoid being seen.
Given I have a very personal experience with loosing my brother to cancer, this movie seems to touch on all the same facets of love and serious disease that I've dealt with. I'm planning on hitting the theater — with an extra box of Kleenex on hand — to see "Sister's Keeper" tonight because I don't think I can wait much longer to take it all in.
When talking with some of the MTV News staff, I found that I was not the only one who gets so affected by a good tearjerker (yes, even a few of the males in the office will admit they have a sensitive side). So I decided to enlist a poll and find out what films really get my co-workers all chocked up.
See the entire list — which, yes, may include a joke or two — after the jump. Read more...

She is feared. She is revered. To some, she is hero, and to others, a villain. But, the new documentary "The September Issue" (out August 28) looks to paint a picture of iconic Vogue editor Anna Wintour as a force to be reckoned with — no matter what you think of her, she is definitely one of the most influential people in fashion culture.
Surrounded by designers like Jean-Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld (pictured with Anna), Thakoon (who compares her to Madonna!) and Vera Wang, as well as colleagues like editor-at-large André Leon Talley, the trailer for "September Issue" isn't just the "Devil Wears Prada" version of Anna (although she does say ridiculous things like, "This type seems so large and pretentious. It looks like it's for blind people."), it also shows how truly powerful she is, sometimes even with a smile on her face. Let's face it, when you can tell legendary designer Oscar de la Renta what clothes you think shouldn't be on his runway, you deserve to be applauded. Read more...

FROM MTV.COM:By a stroke of luck (or, perhaps, fate), MTV was fortunate to launch just before Michael Jackson went supernova.
Back in 1981, he wasn't yet a global brand or a cultural icon — he wasn't even the King of Pop. Rather, he was just ascending to the throne. He'd had some hits (1972's "Ben," the first two cuts — "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock With You" — from 1979's Off the Wall), and he was ready to forever distance himself from his early years with the Jackson 5, but no one knew what to expect from him next.

Carrie Bradshaw must have one serious line of credit at Bloomingdales, because according to "Sex and the City" stylist Patricia Field, the chic columnist's signature style won't be impacted by the recession in the upcoming "SATC" sequel.
Originally, star Sarah Jessica Parker said the recent financial crisis would be reflected in the sequel, which is slated for a spring 2010 release. "Our country has changed significantly in a year," Contact Music quoted the actress as saying. "She will have been affected and she's not an idiot. She's gonna have to change her thinking about indulgence." But costumer Pat, who was also responsible for the fab fashions in "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Confessions of a Shopaholic," put her well-shod foot down, saying there will be none of the sort. The cast of Garry Marshall's "Valentine's Day" is long enough to wear out your eyes. The romantic comedy boasts Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Garner, Shirley MacLaine, Bradley Cooper and Ashton Kutcher. But because it just wasn't big enough, The Hollywood Reporter says that they've added three more: Topher Grace, Emma Roberts, and Hector Elizondo. This will be first time Emma has worked with her aunt Julia on the big screen.
"Valentine's" promises to be an ensemble film similar to "Love, Actually" and focus on five interconnecting stories that all take place in Los Angeles, and all on that day of love. THR is silent on what just those stories might be, but they do report that Grace will play a mailroom worker in an L.A. talent agent, and who is dating Hathaway. Emma Roberts plays a teenager who wants to lose her virginity to her boyfriend. Elizondo (who has been in every Marshall movie made) will play MacLaine's husband. Read more...

It's the paparazzi shot seen 'round the world: Starlet Megan Fox snubbing a young fan as he tries to hand her a long-stemmed yellow rose at the London "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" premiere. The 23-year-old received quite a bit of flack for ignoring her eager acolyte, but she insisted it wasn't intentional.
"There were, like, 80 million people everywhere," she told Collider.com. "It’s dark, all I see are flashes. Everyone’s yelling different things … and I didn’t know that was happening." Offering a heartfelt apology, Megan added, "I’m sorry, sweet boy. I would never do that to you, and I would gladly accept your rose if I see you again." Read more...

FROM MTV.COM: Since the premiere of the second season of "True Blood" earlier this month, the cast of the show has been asked to take sides in an epic battle with the vampires of "Twilight."
For the most part the stars of the HBO show have been reluctant to say outright whether they favor their vamps over the Cullens. But leave it to Stephen Moyer, who plays vampire Bill Compton, to turn a little healthy rivalry into a downright feud by saying some pretty nasty stuff about Edward Cullen to Marie Claire magazine in this month's issue. "He's a pu---!" he said. "He's the Slim-Fast, Diet Coke of vampires." Read more...

Music icon Michael Jackson passed away today at the age of 50 after suffering cardiac arrest at his home in L.A.
The King of Pop leaves behind an incredible legend having swept up an entire generation of fans and musical protégés in his wings. His vocal career, which has spanned decades ever since he first performed with his brothers and sisters as a member of The Jackson 5 in the late 60s, has even impacted the movie industry as his songs have been featured on an upwards of 50 soundtracks.
It may be cheesy, but the movie scene in which Michael Jackson's tunes stand out in my mind the most would have to be from 2004's rom com "13 Going on 30." Read more...
