"This is a story of boy meets girl..." intones the prescient narrator of the Joseph Gordon-Levitt-Zooey Deschanel romantic comedy "(500) Days of Summer." And so begins the tumultuous love affair between Tom, a hopelessly romantic greeting card writer, and Summer, a girl who doesn't believe in true love. The flick opens today in limited release and to encourage you to head down to the multiplex, we've compiled a list of the top 500 reasons you should see this endearing film.
1. JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT
JGL couldn't be more likable — or relatable — as everyman Tom who struggles with love and career choices, like any good 20-something does. If you liked Joseph in "10 Things I Hate About You" consider Tom the older, slightly wiser (yet still just as adorable!) version of lovesick Cameron.
2. IT'SVERY REALISTIC
Summer and Tom bicker. And fight. And argue. A lot. But isn't that what a real relationship is like? We like our rom coms best when they reflect the not-so-perfect world around us, sans the horse-drawn carriage and the entirely far-fetched meet cute.
3. THE STYLE
Zooey positively shines in a collection of crisp, blue-hued vintage pieces while Joseph subconsciously vacillates between comely and chaotic based on his character's relationship footing with Summer. Check back in on Monday for our exclusive interview with "(500) Days" costume designer Hope Hanafin to get the full scoop on the movie's delicious wardrobe.
4. THE SOUNDTRACK
"These songs build bridges between Tom and Summer and they tear them down," director Marc Webb told PLAYBACK: stl "Music is the soul of this movie." From Hall & Oates' infectious ditty "You Make My Dreams Come True" to The Smiths "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out," you'll no doubt leave the theater with at least one tune stuck in your head.
5.THE DANCE SCENE
Take our word on this one and relish in JGL's fancy footwork. If it doesn't put a smile on your face, we don't know what will.
