“The Ugly Truth” opens today, and we can’t wait to see what kinds of pointers Gerard Butler has in store for how to land the "perfect" male specimen. Although Katherine Heigl is naturally gorgeous — especially as a a cover girl — Gerard’s character Mike decides to tell her the ugly truth about her non-existent love life. As Gerard teaches Katherine’s character how to find love based on his somewhat outlandish theories (yeah...guys like girls to have hair they can "pull on"), it reminds us of a few other movies where helpful instruction leads to infatuation. You know, when the “teacher” becomes the student, and the love guru sometimes forgets how to play his own game!
"Drive Me Crazy"
This oldie but goodie starring Melissa Joan Hart and "Entourage" actor Adrian Grenier is the classic “instructed” love story. Nicole (Melissa) coaxes her longtime friend and next door neighbor Chase (Adrian) to pretend to date in order to make both of their ex’s jealous. Eventually, they find themselves more comfortable than they think ... thanks mostly to a makeover given to the grungy Chase. Despite using each other, they, of course, end up together.
"He’s Just Not That Into You"
When the needy and somewhat desperate Gigi (Ginnifer Goodwin) is searching for her prince charming, she happens upon Alex (Justin Long), a bartender who — shocker! — has just the sort of advice Gigi needs in order to win over the right guy. Guiding Gigi in the ways of men somehow forces Alex to see the lost puppy in a new light. Though he tries to shun his feelings, both of them admit to falling under a love spell for each other just in time for the movie to conclude.
"Hitch"
As “The Date Doctor” (Alex) in “Hitch,” Will Smith plays a Casanova who teaches his clients how to win the women of their dreams (no matter how out of reach they are). In the midst of teaching the clumsy Albert (Kevin James) how to nab a beautiful woman, Hitch finds himself falling for gossip columnist Sara (Eva Mendes), and forgets how to play his own game. Breaking all of his own rules, however, winds up working and he gets the girl! Who would've seen that coming?
What’s your favorite “instructional” love story? What do you think is “the ugly truth” about dating?
