It seems like unconventional, thoughtful romantic heroes are having a moment. First there was Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Tom in the refreshing "500 Days of Summer" and now comes "Adam." Hugh Dancy stars as the titular character, a sheltered young man who, after the death of his father, has to learn how to live on his own. That's where teacher Beth (Rose Byrne) comes along. She's his new neighbor who serves as a source of inspiration to Adam when it seems like she's the only person in the world willing to lend him a friendly hand.
Things get complicated (after all, this is a romantic comedy underneath all its layers!) by a disorder Adam has suffered from all of this life — Asperger's syndrome, which can best be described as an increasingly common form of functionable autism. Learning what this syndrome was all about (and how to portray it on the big screen) was no easy feat for Hugh, who says that he turned to books and talked to experts. In doing all of his research, however, he came across one interesting pop culture collision: there was a contestant on Cycle 9 of "America's Next Top Model" who suffered from Asperger's and the actor was quite impressed with how many people were aware of her and her condition. Press play below to hear more about how Hugh prepared for his role and Adam's connection with "ANTM."
