Hot on the heels of word "Dirty Dancing" would be getting a 21st century makeover, comes a new trailer for another highly anticipated '80s dance flick remake,"Fame," which slinks onto the big screen September 25.
While the first "Fame" trailer introduced us to the New York City High School for Performing Arts ("Where any dream is possible") and its star-studded faculty (Kelsey Grammer! Megan Mullally! Debbie Allen! Bebe Neuwirth!), this brand-new trailer (embedded above) focuses on the five friends — Alice, Malik, Denise, Jenny and Victor — at the heart of this coming-of-age tale.
We're first introduced to Alice (played by Kherington Payne), a skilled dancer who has apparently been discovered on YouTube and is headed for a world tour. Shimmying in her black leotard and blonde bob, the former "So You Think You Can Dance" contestant sure does looks ready to headline a production of "Chicago."
Next is Malik (played by Collins Pennie) who says his mom, "doesn't want me to be an actor or a rapper." But when fellow classmate Denise asks why he doesn't study something else, he responds, "because there isn't anything else I want to be." Way to live the dream, Malik!
Speaking of Denise (played by Naturi Naughton), her parents aren't so much on board with her musical pursuits either. "My parents think I'm practicing cello all day," she reveals, though it's clear singing is her true passion once she belts out the flick's title song.
Then there's Jenny (played by Kay Panabaker) who seems to lack the self-confidence inherent in many of her performing peers. "How do you know if you're good enough?" she asks. I wasn't able to divine her talent from the trailer, but she looks to be nurturing quite a flirtation with hunky Andy Matthews (played by Cody Longo ... or is that Asher Book we see with her and we're getting our hunks confused??), which I'm going to count as a talent in and of itself.
Finally, there's Victor (played by Walter Perez), the sum of whose appearances are shaking Kelsey Grammer's hand and semi-stalking Alice. I think he's a producer. But I'm not sure. We'll have to wait on that one, I guess.
Overall, the catchy music and splashy dance numbers make me eager to meet the fabulous five from "Fame" come September 25.
How about you?
