Who doesn’t love Meryl Streep? There’s no doubt she is the greatest actress of her generation — 13 Oscar nominations and two wins are pretty impressive for anyone, let alone someone who hit 60 this June — and one of the most versatile ladies around. After all, eight male thespians wouldn’t dedicate a night of great screen monologues to just anyone, would they?
Variety reported the Sept. 5 performance of great Streep-ologues at LA’s bang. comedy theater was the idea of actor-comedian Roy Cruz. The show, entitled "Streep Tease," will be homage to the best scenes in Meryl’s career, including ones from "The Devil Wears Prada," "Out of Africa" and "Sophie’s Choice."
"We are also honoring the writers of these movies," Roy told Variety. "We fell in love with Meryl not only because of her work but that of the directors and writers of her films."
The bang. website explains that "some of the most beautiful, painful, thought-provoking, funny, emotionally resonant monologues in film history have been delivered by the incomparable, two-time Oscar winner, Meryl Streep. (Saturday Sept. 5), they’ll be delivered by…men."
Roy will be performing the infamous cerulean lecture from “The Devil Wears Prada” — a scene which is apparently a staple from his stand-up routine. ("But what you don't know is," Meryl says in character, "that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean. You're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar De La Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers ...")
Taylor Negron, Sam Pancake, Steve Hasley, David Dean Bottrell, Eddie Sanchez, Mike Rose and Trent Walker are the fellow actors who will be also be celebrating the actress. They shared that they chose their individual scenes for reasons from: adoring Meryl’s accent to the fact she played the mother they always wanted.
Tickets for the event are going for $10 a piece, but the show will also be streamed live on the theater's website. Since Roy dished to Variety he’d "cancel the show" if Meryl showed up to the performance, you can be sure she’ll be watching from the comfort of her own home. We most certainly will be.
What do you think of men delivering Meryl's famous movie lines? Hilariously funny or hilariously awkward?
