Young adult vampire fiction worlds have collided at last -- last night, the cheeky writers at "The Vampire Diaries" acknowledged that other popular book series about a teenage girl falling in love with a vampire. Though there have been no disturbances in the space-time continuum just yet, keep an eye out. In addition to the fantastic tongue-in-cheek "Twilight" shout-out (more on that in just two short paragraphs), last night's "VD" episode truly was the best yet. We got more on the history of the Salvatore brothers, a slew of sarcastic Salvatore brother one-liners, and a conspiracy among the Mystic Falls town leaders. Juicy! Here's a list of what we learned this week:
-Vampires deal with their anger differently than people. When Damon invaded Stefan's dreams and made him have a nightmare about Damon killing Elena, Stefan's angry response was to stab his brother in the stomach. Because that's a normal reaction to sibling rivalry — you know, just a friendly knife fight between two brothers.
-The show's writers finally acknowledged "Twilight" in the form of a well-placed dig. When Damon was persuading Caroline to take him to the Founder's Day party, he was flipping through a certain novel. "What's so special about this Bella girl? Edward's so whipped." Since Caroline apparently knows that Damon's a vampire (uh, when was that established?), she asked him why he doesn't sparkle. "Because I live in the real world where vampires burn in the sun," he responded. "But you go in the sun." "Yeah, but I have a ring. It protects me. Long story."
-The random human Salvatore relative, Zach, has a secret stash of the mysterious vampire-resistant herb/flower/weed vervane (in a hidden basement room with grow lights and everything. I know that term because of "Weeds," I swear). Stefan somehow thinks locking Damon in the room will keep him from escaping and hurting anyone else, but that seems like a short-sighted plan to me. He's clearly going to escape and wreak more havoc on the town.
-Several new characters were introduced, including Caroline's mom, a.k.a. the sheriff, Tyler's parents, a.k.a. the mayor and his wife, and Jenna's ex-boyfriend, a.k.a. the local TV news reporter. Together, they form the group of people who, we found out at the very end of the episode, know that vampires exist and have realized they're back in town. If only they had the Gilbert family pocket watch to protect them. Too bad Jeremy got all sensitive about his parents' death and Elena let him keep it.
-In side character news, Elena saw Caroline's bites. How will Stefan and Damon explain them? Elena's caught on to so much by now that Stefan has to be close to telling her the truth. Tyler finally started to treat Vicki a little nicer, but ignored her around his parents and didn't even bring her inside at the Founder's party. When Vicki finally stormed off, she ran for comfort in Jeremy's arms — and mouth (because they made out, heyo!). Bonnie, meanwhile, is still realizing the full extent of her powers. This week, she learned that she can light an entire room full of candles with her mind. Badass.
Final thoughts: Was Elena wearing a Bumpit to the party? Am I crazy or was there really no diary-writing to speak of this week? And we've surmised that the rings the brothers wear are protective, but will we hear the full story? Now that we know a lot more about the brothers' and the town's history, I want to know all about the ring, vervane, the crystal Damon took from a box at the party.
What did you think of this week's episode? The best yet, or a bunch of boring back story?
