We're still reeling from the tragic news of Brittany Murphy's untimely death this morning (keep updated with the unfolding story at MTV News). At only 32-years-old, Brittany managed to have a long and successful Hollywood career. Before popping in our well-worn copy of "Clueless" for a memorial viewing, we sent out a call via Twitter for the roles you liked Brittany in the most. It's hard to pinpoint her greatest performances without leaving out some of our favorites, but here, along with our own input, is Hollywood Crush's list of the best of Brittany Murphy:
1. "Clueless," 1995 (Tai)
In this seminal 1995 teen comedy, Brittany charmed as Tai, a delightfully naive New York teen transplanted into the ritzy world of Beverly Hills. A fish out of water at first — complete with Kool Aid-dyed hair, a penchant for Marvin the Martian drawings and ever-so-hip overalls ("She could be a farmer in those clothes," quipped a catty rival) — post-makeover, she became a plaid skirt-wearing, slang-spouting member of her high school's elite group (which included Alicia Silverstone and Stacey Dash). Repeat after us: "Rolling with the homies..."
2. "Girl, Interrupted," 1999 (Daisy)
Brittany proved her range by moving from lighthearted fare to more serious roles — like her chilling portrayal of psychiatric patient Daisy, a sexually abused girl suffering from an eating disorder and self-injury, in "Girl, Interrupted." Though Angelina Jolie memorably won the best supporting actress Oscar for her role in the film, Brittany and her striking performance rounded out a stellar cast.
3. "8 Mile," 2002 (Alex)
As wannabe model Alex, the girlfriend of aspiring rapper Rabbit, in Eminem's film debut, Brittany was "dynamite" according to Peter Travers of Rolling Stone. "Murphy plays Alex with hot desperation and calloused vulnerability," the critic continued. Perhaps she was able to embrace the role wholeheartedly because she really enjoyed the subject matter and her costars: Brittany told MTV News back in 2006 that filming a movie with such an enormous music connection was "really fun," adding that, "There was music being created everywhere."
4. "King of the Hill," 1997-2009 (voice of Luanne)
Brittany voiced the character of Luanne, the gullible niece of Hank and Peggy Hill, on this long-running animated series that ended its 13-season run earlier this year. The not-so-bright character disappeared from the show for a spell midway through its run while Brittany took advantage of her lucrative movie career and box-office success.
5. "Uptown Girls," 2003 (Molly)
The starlet went from riches-to-rags as the spoiled, wealthy Molly, a daughter of a deceased rock star, who upon losing her fortune, is forced to become a nanny to an uptight 8-year-old (played by Hollywood Crush fave Dakota Fanning). Ultra-spontaneous and irresponsible (yet oh-so-charming) at first, Molly manages to grow up while her precocious charge learns how to be a kid.
