Its not hard to see why Lady Gaga ranked as MTV News' Woman of the Year for 2009. From her catchy dance tunes to her epic performances, the New York native had us caught in a so-bad-it-was-good romance all year long. But, what's more signature Gaga than her performances is her collection of crazy couture. Amidst the topiary of feathers, chorus line of leotards and bounty of skull-crushing headdresses, we realized something: The eccentric pop star's fashions totally reflected the chaotic, cuckoo year that was 2009. Hence, a look back at the singer's expository styles:
WE SAVED FACE
It was a tough year for many folks, what with the recession and unemployment on the rise. We all tried to make the best of it and no one saved face more than Lady Gaga—by covering hers. Whether it be a scarlet-hued lace shroud or a Zorro mask, the singer's "Poker Face" was probably the most covered part of her body in 2009.
WE INDULGED IN MANY BUBBLE BATHS
With all the financial uncertainty of the past year, it was the little things that brought us pleasure, like a good book, a homemade dinner with friends, and you better believe more than a few stress-relieving bubble baths. We have a feeling Lady Gaga favors a long soak in the tub too seeing as she brought the bubbles with her to a San Diego concert back in March.
WE CRAVED BLOOD—OR MORE ACCURATELY—BLOODSUCKERS
The only pop-culture phenomenon powerful enough to eclipse Lady Gaga in the '09 was vampire fever. From Edward Cullen to Eric Northman, we thirsted for bloodsuckers just as much as they thirsted for our blood. Though not an outright homage to the undead, it's hard to miss the symbolism of the pop star's blood-drenched VMA performance, where she sang about another breed of reviled bloodsuckers—the paparazzi.
WE HATED PANTS
What began with Beyonce's unitard-clad ode to single ladies everywhere became a full-fleged pants protest in the hands of the House of Gaga. Her ever-present leotards and sometimes stocking-covered (though often bare) gams made pants seem passe. Whether you eschewed trousers in favor of skirts, dresses, leggings—or perhaps even Gaga's bold bare look—we bet your denim got less love in '09.
WE WITNESSED THE MUPPETS MAKE A COMEBACK
Lady Gaga heralded the return of Kermit and Co. flaunting a frog-swathed frock for a German talk show appearance in July, and a few months later—much to the chagrin of a certain pig—took Kermie as her date to the MTV Video Music Awards. This year marked the 30th anniversary of "The Muppet Movie," and with funnyman Jason Segel working on a new Muppet flick, we have a feeling Gaga and Jim Henson's creatures have a long future ahead of them.
