We thought we were in love with the romantic comedy "(500) Days of Summer," but apparently we may be the film's second biggest fan behind a Texas man named Ricky. The smitten suitor took over an outlet mall courtyard to propose to girlfriend Stephanie by reenacting Joseph Gordon-Levitt's "(500) Days" dance sequence to "You Make My Dreams Come True"! And, of course, it was all caught on tape.
Dressed in a sweater vest/chino ensemble, Ricky walks his girlfriend through the El Paso shopping center as the Hall & Oates classic blares from an unknown source. He high fives passersby (implanted friends, no doubt), finally stopping in front of a fountain with an unfortunately positioned pole that obscures part of the performance. Oh well. Undeterred, he dances. He cracks a bat. He's lifted by a group of friends. All while his girlfriend looks on likely wondering, "What the heck?" until he grabs her hand and gets down on one knee. And if the suspense is killing you, yes, she said yes.
According to Ricky's YouTube site, he only decided to do the dance number four days before the proposal and only practiced one hour the day before. To all of this I say, Bravo! Because isn't that what a great romantic film should do? Inspire demonstrations of unabashed love and devotion? Bravo, Ricky! And bravo movie makers for creating a love story that resonates with its audience long past the final credits.
