2010 has already been a big year for Carrie Underwood. She’s announced her engagement to hockey star Mike Fisher, as well as her TV acting debut, and now we’ve learned that she’s landed a role on the big screen, as well.
Variety reports that Carrie, who picked up a Grammy for Best Country Collaboration (with Randy Travis) and was one of the stars featured in the Michael Jackson tribute at Sunday's Grammy Awards, earned herself a role in the indie drama "Soul Surfer." The movie, which is based on teen surfing champ and shark attack survivor Bethany Hamilton, will also star Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt and AnnaSophia Robb.
The film centers on the surf icon Bethany (played by AnnaSophia), who defied all odds to compete and win professional championships after losing her arm in a shark attack at age 13. Carrie will take on the role of a church youth leader. Dennis and Helen will play Hamilton’s parents.
Carrie joins her other "American Idol" alum that have taken a stab at acting, which include Kevin Covais, Katharine McPhee and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson. We’re excited to see how she does on the big screen!
Filming for “Soul Surfer” is currently underway in Hawaii, and the movie is set to debut later this year.
