"Whatcha Say" singer Jason Derülo is set to make his big screen debut in the MTV film "Turn The Beat Around," premiering Friday, February 26, at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. Jason will play a pop star looking for the next great dancer to join his dance crew.
MTV News had a chance to sit down with Jason and chat with him about his feelings on the role. "I'm super, super excited about it. I'm so glad that MTV asked me to be a part of it," he said. "It's a dance movie. It's a lot of high-energy dance and it's a great time."
Jason, who has no formal acting training (his first passion is singing: he recently toured with Lady Gaga and his self-titled debut LP comes out on March 2), is not worried about the fact that he’s new to the scene. He’s comfortable with the fact that the role is focused on singing and dancing, and though he hasn’t had a professional acting role, he has been doing it most of his life.
"My role in this movie is I'm the pop star in the film — they're auditioning for my video and all that stuff," he explained. "This is my foray into acting and I'm really excited 'cause I've been acting my entire life. So I mean, I definitely want people to get to know that side of me because I feel like my acting will take precedent at some point. My music is obviously the forefront right now, but I'm as much an actor as I am a singer."
Jason is focused on his music career, but don’t let that fool you – he plans on taking this whole acting thing very seriously. "It's a blessing. It's awesome, man," he said. "I don't want people to think I'm one of those singers who's just doing acting 'cause I can. I can stand my ground as an actor — if I only had one talent and acting was it, I think I could do well for myself."
