Kelly Cutrone is as straight forward as they come. If watching her on "The Hills," "The City" and her new show, "Kell on Earth," didn’t make that blatantly obvious, then reading her new book, "If You Have to Cry Go Outside," will certainly solidify the PR mavens' brutally honest reputation.
In the book, which is out on bookstore shelves now, she discusses everything from her childhood, her early fascination with MTV, her life a publicist in the cut throat world of fashion PR and her life as a single mother and two-time divorcee. If that doesn't make her fun book-part memoir-part advice column seem like a great read then perhaps Kelly herself can convince you to pick up a copy.
"I still cry like twice a year in the office," she tells MTV News, noting that fashion week tends to be a very stressful and emotional time of the year. "But yeah I still cry in the office and the kids cry. We just try not to make it a crying fest. It's not the Tammy Faye show. It’s the Kelly Cutrone cry."
She adds that book accurately, in her opinion, shares what it's like to be Kelly Cutrone, who she thinks at this point, has been defined in the public sphere as "Cruella de Vil of the modern day or the bitch and the witch." "It’s a reality check, yeah. We all understand what its like to be sad," she said. "It's just unprofessional to be balling your eyes out in somebody's place of business."
And, while Kelly isn't scared to keep it real in life or in the pages of her book, there was some censoring involved. "We were gonna do outtakes, which I was really wanting to do. I had to tone down the drug use in the book I had to tone down some of the late night stuff," she said. "This book is like 'Flowers in the Attic' for the 17-year-old. Your moms probably don’t want you to read this book. It's like not what moms want their daughters to read. I really think this what young women and gay men need to know right now."
So, what does Kelly's mom think of the book? "My mom liked this [cover] picture and my fans hate it. My mom's like 'You look great. You're wearing makeup,'" she joked. "And [the fans are] like 'Why does she look so clean cut? We hate it.' "
Have you read Kelly's book yet?
