Yesterday we brought you Kevin Alejandro's thoughts on his cop series, "Southland," which is currently airing on TNT after getting a premature axe from NBC before its second season even aired. Today, we have something even juicier — 411 on Kevin's new gig as a hospital worker named Jesus on HBO's "True Blood." Unfortunately, he couldn't spill many actual details about what, exactly, his role entails (they're pretty tight-lipped over at "True Blood" headquarters), but he tried his hardest to give us the scoop on his character, who just so happens to be Lafayette's (Nelsan Ellis) new love interest.
Kevin said that Jesus is going to be hanging around Bon Temps for the entire season, which began shooting a couple of weeks ago. "There's not a whole lot I can tell you about it because they're very, very secretive with what is released and what's out there," he said.
He doesn't even know who else besides Lafayette his character will interact with. "I'm not really sure yet. It's so new — I think right now they're establishing what Lafayette and Jesus are going to have. Also, I don't get the whole script. If I'm not in the script, I don't get it. They're very, very secretive. I wish I could answer that question!"
It's been difficult for Kevin to research his part, since Jesus is a character created completely by "True Blood" mastermind Alan Ball. (Lafayette died in the first book of the series "True Blood" is based on, and he didn't yet have a love interest.) But Kevin said he's excited about Jesus, since the character is like nothing he's ever done before. "I've never really played a strong gay character or anything like that."
Luckily, Alan has been able to give Kevin clues as to what Jesus is all about. "[Alan] gives me little hints of who [Jesus] might be and what he might be going through, so I'll research those things, like what makes up that guy," Kevin said. "Help, I'm struggling for words here because I don't want to give anything away! The problem is that I can't refer to any the books so I have to focus on what people like him have gone through — if there are any stories out there like that."
What Kevin does know about Jesus (that he can tell us) is that he's a hospital orderly who takes care of Lafayette's mother, played by the awesome Alfre Woodard. In fact, Kevin said his first scene on his first day of shooting was with Alfre. "I'm sitting there holding a bowl of peas, because I'm feeding her — she's in the hospital. I'm sitting there and she's spitting peas at me and I'm like 'Wow, Alfre Woodard is really spitting peas at me.'"
If "Southland" does, in fact, get picked up for another season by TNT, he'll have an epic schedule to juggle. "I'm one of those lucky guys who gets to do two great shows," he said. As for the scheduling, he said he's just going to do what he's told. "Fortunately the production companies on both sides are awesome and talk to each other. They seem to really want to work with each other. I think it's a great thing. Wherever they tell me to go, I'm going to go. I'll probably be exhausted."
Are you excited to see what sort of dynamic Kevin's character, Jesus, will bring to Bon Temps? What do you think about Lafayette getting a love interest? Have you started your countdown to the new season of "True Blood" yet?
