It's pretty hard to miss the 3G coverage war going on between Verizon and AT&T, and Verizon's newest commercial is telling AT&T and their customers to "suck it," quite literally. The ad spoofs the now classic (and frequently mocked) woods scene from "Twilight" where Edward tells Bella he is a vampire, and it might be our favorite spoof yet.
"Make me yours Sebastian, forever," a very blonde female actress begs to a very RPattz-esque "Sebastian." The dramatic music crescendos as the vampire fangs pop out before a brief ping grabs Sebastian's attention.
The now very familiar AT&T 3G map is hovering over her head (a staple of current Verizon commercials) as the fangs retreat and Sebastian says, "Forever is a really long time to be struggling with slow music downloads and e-mails. I'm just gonna" and then zips off to some other girls who have the Verizon 3G map above their heads.
The baffled blonde is left behind in the woods, where a wolf (our Jacob spoof here) comes up behind her and says with a wink, "So 'sup?"
There are a few subliminal messages we can take away from this ad. First and foremost, Verizon is clearly Team Edward, which not only makes this Crusher feel great about having her allegiances match up with her cell phone provider, but also aligns them with the megastar Robert Pattinson.
On the flip side, they are saying AT&T and their customers are Team Jacob, who in this commercial (and I guess in the books, sort of) are picking up the woman that wasn't good enough for Edward/Sebastian/Verizon. Sorry, Jake, but this ad isn't making you look too great.
Verizon is clearly aiming for a certain demographic here: the tweens in the process of either getting their first cell phone (at what age are kids getting their first cell phones nowadays?) or switching providers. Only time will tell whether the ad has any lasting effect, but the real question is, why didn't Verizon run this ad during the Superbowl?
