It’s been about three years since Lindsay Lohan hit rock bottom, abusing alcohol and drugs and being arrested for drunk driving (twice) in a very public arena. The young actress has found it hard to escape the image she created for herself, but is definitely trying.
In a new interview with British newspaper The Sun published today, Lindsay came out to publicly address her problems and the root of them.
"I tried to mask my problems with alcohol, cocaine and mind-altering substances," Lindsay, now 23, told the paper. "Now I'm in a place where I don't need to use anything and I can feel emotions because I choose to.”
She said the cause stemmed from her father, particularly his very public airing of their family problems. But he caused her problems with more than that.
"I was only aware of cocaine because of my dad," Lindsay said. "I was terrified of it. But I tried it because I was stubborn, stupid, and wanted to see what it was like."
Lindsay also came out and talked about her very public relationship with DJ Samantha Ronson. She admitted the relationship was a bit scary because it was so public as well as being her first lesbian relationship, and added Samantha is the only woman she has ever been attracted to. The pair split in early 2009.
"We love each other,” Lindsay said. “We might reconcile the relationship, maybe. I don't know.”
Though it is sure to take a while for Lindsay to return to the family-friendly image of her youth, it is nice to hear that the still very young actress is on the road to recovery. She is still seeing a therapist twice a week and attends alcohol education lessons.
"I'm allowed to drink now but I know my limits," she said. "I learned from my mistakes, and I'm now healthy and happier. I've made some dreadful mistakes but learned from them — that has probably saved my life."
What do you think of Lindsay's open interview with The Sun?
