"Life Unexpected" moved to its Monday time slot this week (right before the newly returned "Gossip Girl"!), but rest assured the plotlines of our favorite new parents picked up right where they left off last Wednesday.
Freshly split Ryan and Cate have the good fortune of going through breakup rites (Cate clears her home of all things love-related) while not only working together, but under strict orders of their producer, keeping up the charade that they are still a happy, engaged couple. This is put to the ultimate test when they are forced to be the local celebrity faces of Portland's Bridal Expo.
Lux, now both boyfriendless and best-friendless with Tasha in her new foster home three hours away, is spending her days on Baze's couch. That is, until the return of cutie, star quarterback Jones (Austin Butler). Jones, already crushing on Lux, stops by the bar on the pretense of dropping off homework, when Baze jumps on the opportunity to cheer Lux up by bribing Jones to take her on a date. J takes L on a "secret" day trip to see Tasha (orchestrated by Baze), and while they bond over bands like Dirty Mittens, when Lux finds out she was asked out "in exchange for a tune-up," we find little L back at square one: friendless and missing Bug.
Back at the Expo, Ryan and Cate are living their wedding-that-would've-been. Seeing Cate in white satin begins to soften Ryan until Baze shows up to confront him about trying to steal fatherly duties from him. The Father Wars continue as Ryan, Baze and Math are pitted against each other in a Who-Knows-Cate-Best showdown the K100 producers are sure will drive the morning-show radio ratings.
The contest gets real when Ryan announces to a watching audience that his relationship deal-breaker is none other than "Baze" and storms offstage. Ryan, Baze and Cate go at it backstage until Ryan finally calls Cate out on living in a world of lies, telling her, "Don't bother trying to fix us Cate, just fix yourself." (Side note: Poor, innocent Math gets hit in the crossfire when he finds out his bestie slept with his dream girl and he too storms off, albeit unnoticed.)
So. Ryan is mad at Cate. Baze is mad at Ryan. Lux is mad at Baze. (Oh, and don't forget, Math is mad at Baze too.) Until! Ryan stops by the bar to apologize to Baze. (Who saw that coming?) The guys make up over a beer and Ryan even convinces Lux that Baze only bribed Jones because he cares. Spirit renewed, Lux goes over to Jones' house to propose starting over as friends, while Cate is left to cry alone into a wedding dress. Until next week!
