Not everyone had such nice things to say about Gabourey Sidibe following both Oprah and Sandra Bullock’s praise of the budding actress during the Oscar ceremony on Sunday. Outspoken radio personality Howard Stern decided to weigh in on the subject via his Sirius satellite show Monday — calling Gabourey “enormous” — and then defended his original comments on-air this morning.
“There’s the most enormous, fat black chick I’ve ever seen,” he quipped on Monday. “She is enormous. Everyone’s pretending she’s a part of show business and she’s never going to be in another movie. She should have gotten the Best Actress award because she’s never going to have another shot. What movie is she gonna be in?”
Co-host Robin Quivers, who usually has just as much to say as Howard in the shock-worthy department, chimed in, “And Oprah’s lying and saying you’re going to have a brilliant career.”
What does Howard think about Oprah? “Oprah’s another liar, a filthy liar,” he said. “She’s telling an enormous woman the size of a planet that she’s going to have a career.”
Howard should have tried doing better research before writing off Gabourey so adamantly, as she already has many projects in the works. She will first appear opposite Laura Linney as a bright student in the new Showtime series “The C Word,” and then be back on the big-screen with actress Zoe Kravitz (Lenny’s daughter) in the drama “Yelling to the Sky.”
Howard’s chances of getting Gabby — or Oprah for that matter — to appear on his show in the future are now equivalent to his chances of winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
The radio host defended himself against insensitivity accusations on his show this morning, claiming he intended to draw attention to obesity in the U.S. Howard and Robyn drew comparisons to co-host Artie Lange’s suicide attempt, allegedly provoked by his obesity.
“Like, I kind of don’t see a difference between what our Artie did – Artie tried to kill himself. And I feel this girl, in a slower way…she’s gonna kill herself,” Howard explained.
Robin agreed, “The girl is obese. You don’t have to be unhealthy to do that part.”
