Howard Stern continues to insist that his comments on Gabourey Sidibe, via his Sirius radio show, served no other purpose than to raise concern over obesity in the U.S.
In defense of his comments, he declared that Gabby should not be considered a role model for other overweight women to love their bodies, because what they really should be doing — according to Howard — is dropping the pounds.
He explains, “The point I was trying to make is that obesity in this country is out of control. What’s really sad is that you do see people now saying it’s OK to be this heavy, you have to love your own body, and you have to embrace it.”
Howard Stern maintained his position that Gabourey’s health could be at risk.
“I feel this girl is going to kill herself, you can’t eat like this. I did enjoy her performance [in 'Precious'], I have nothing against her. The fact is that I’m just trying to say she’s enormous.”
But only moments after describing how much he enjoyed Gabourey’s performance in "Precious," Howard abruptly changed his mind. Responding to a comment that the performance was brilliant, Howard retorted, "[On her acting] By the way, brilliant? I don’t know.”
“The reason Sidibe didn’t win the award is because there wasn’t as much acting except walking around like in a catatonic state,” he continued. “It was more about her physical appearance that actually made her great in that movie. There really wasn’t much acting involved. She was more of a prop.”
Wait a minute… Is it just me, or did he just say her physical appearance is what made her great, even though he’s spent so much energy bashing it? Is there any sense to be found in Howard’s words, and more importantly, do you believe in Gabourey’s acting chops?
