Slainte! Today is Saint Patrick's Day, and that means three things:
1. Your friends, neighbors, and co-workers will all be decked out in an incredibly unflattering shade of kelly green.
2. After the hour of ten o'clock in the morning, everyone you see may or may not be intoxicated.
3. Luck! Specifically, the luck of the Irish.
Unfortunately, we're not so much for the kelly green around here (brights make us look washed out). And we are definitely NOT intoxicated. (No, really!) But we do know our lucky-stuff — specifically, movies involving it! So in honor of St. Patty's, we've put together a lovely list of (lucky!) seven movies
Read on for movies about luck, movies about getting lucky, and movies that just have the word "luck" in a title. And as you read it, ask yourself: Do you feel lucky?
Well, DO YA?
1. "Just My Luck"
Lindsay Lohan and Chris Pine play, respectively, a lucky girl and an unlucky guy who keep trading their "luck" back and forth like some sort of highly contagious venereal disease. But other than that, this is a cute movie — and it's kind of nice to see Lindsay Lohan, y'know, BEFORE.
2. "Good Luck Chuck"
If you've ever wanted to put a curse on Dane Cook (and seriously, who hasn't?), you might be able to get a teensy thrill from seeing flounder his way through this story an obnoxious jerk with terrible luck in love. Alas, the adorable Jessica Alba also tied herself to this fail whale of a film, which makes us feel sad.
3. "It Could Happen To You"
Lovely, lucky and based on a true story! A good-hearted cop (Nicholas Cage) offers a good-hearted waitress (Bridget Fonda) half the winnings from his lottery ticket when he gets stuck without enough money for a tip... and then wins the lottery. Adorable! Of course, then some bad stuff happens, but two people that lucky sort of have to end up together, so they do.
4. "Good Night, and Good Luck"
There's no whimsical coincidence in this rather serious film about CBS newsmen who get on Senator Joe McCarthy's bad side, but those who watch it are lucky enough to see silver fox George Clooney and foxy-fox Robert Downey Jr. working side-by-side in cute retro business suits. Meow.
5. "Lucky Number Slevin"
Uber-hottie Josh Hartnett plays a man who's not only cursed with the ridiculous name, "Slevin," but who also unluckily tries to squat in a friend's apartment on the same day that a bunch of gun-totin' mobsters show up to settle a debt. Cue two hours of mistaken identities, death-battles, plot twists and more PLOT TWISTS, WHOA!
6. "The Joy Luck Club"
In honor of the Irish holiday, we're proud to present a film about... Chinese ladies. Hey, it's got "luck" in it! Plus, the tangled-up stories of four women and their daughters (which jumps back and forth in time and around the globe) is super-dramatic and moving.
7. "Leprechaun"
If you've ever entertained the idea of catching a leprechaun and making him hand over his mythical pot of gold, this movie ought to change your mind. Because leprechauns are not fun-loving little dudes who want to hand over their hard-guarded cash; they are PSYCHOTIC small creatures who want to KILL EVERYONE. Especially...Jennifer Aniston?!! Uh, wow. Her ability to have an awesome career after this movie makes her, officially, one of the luckiest women alive.
What are your favorite movies about luck?
