We're getting a little worried about Pierce Brosnan because, with the release of the "The Greatest" trailer, it marks his second film in a one month period of time that involved his oldest child dying. At least in "The Greatest" (hitting theaters April 2), Pierce looks to be a much better father than he was in last month's "Remember Me," though we're just happy he isn't sporting that atrocious Brooklyn accent.
The film stars Carey Mulligan, the girl-crush of our lives the Academy Award nominated actress who everyone seems to be talking about lately, as a young girl named Rose who finally speaks with the boy of her dreams (played by Aaron Johnson aka "Kick-Ass") before he is killed in a tragic car accident.
"I knew this boy," she narrates in the opening of the trailer. "We would pass each other every day after school in the exact same spot. Sometimes it would be so intense, we would start looking at each other from the very beginning of the steps. And on the last day of school, he talked to me, and everything was happening exactly the way it was supposed to be, and I was the happiest I've ever been. He was everything I imagined he would be, and I was in love with him."
While in most tragic romantic films, this story arc would be enough to carry the entire movie, what makes us excited about "The Greatest" is that that is only the beginning of the story. Turns out from their brief affair, Rose finds out she is pregnant. She goes to the family of her boy, named Bennett, and asks her to take them in. The mother (Susan Sarandon) is having more trouble accepting her than the father (Pierce) and brother (Johnny Simmons) are, and the rest of the film seems to dually follow her pregnancy as well as their progression of grief.
We feel like we might have seen this movie a couple times in the past, but the fresh cast and great acting skills they provide mean that this is still something we'll be looking forward to when it hits theaters in two weeks.
