The Irish film "The Eclipse" is finally making its way to American theaters today after almost a year on the film festival circuit. When we heard this news, we couldn't help be reminded of a certain other film with a very similar name that we wish was coming out this Friday.
So, despite the fact we still have a little more than three months to wait until "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" hits theaters, we decided to find all the striking "similarities" between the two films to make going to see "The Eclipse" be almost the equivalent of watching "Eclipse."
Both films have: A love triangle
And a female at the center, nonetheless! While Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is busy choosing between her vampire boyfriend (Robert Pattinson) and werewolf best friend (Taylor Lautner), novel writer Lena Morelle (Iben Hjejle) is tossed between her ex-lover (Aidan Quinn) and a still-mourning widower (Ciarán Hinds). We're assuming that "The Eclipse" won't actually have a steamy scene in a tent like "Eclipse" does, but at least we saw in the film's featurette that the men come to fisticuffs over their lady love.
Both films take place in: A precipitation-friendly town
Forks, Wash. is the city with the most overcast, rainy days in the United States. "The Eclipse" takes place in a "misty Irish seaside town." Apparently the only way to have an "Eclipse" in this day and age is to be someplace where you can't see the sky.
Both films have a: Troubled father/daughter relationship brought about by an absent mother
Sure, Bella's mother Renee is still alive and kicking in "Eclipse," while the wife of Michael Farr (Ciarán) has recently passed away of cancer, but the lack of a mother in the picture defines the relationships of the fathers with their daughters in both films. Both Charlie and Bella as well as Michael and his daughter are brunettes, which emphasizes the fact we aren't making this connection up.
Both films center around: The supernatural
So what if "Eclipse" centers around werewolves and vampires while "The Eclipse" is a ghost story? All of these beings aren't actually real, and most are used to scare us away from misbehaving when we are children. We're thinking "The Eclipse" is going to offer quite a few more thrills and chills than "Eclipse" will, but if the Academy can consider "Twilight" a horror film, we think we can consider "Eclipse" one as well.
And last but not least ...
Iben's character Lena Morelle writes a supernatural novel called "The Eclipse," which is where the film gets its title. Stephenie Meyer wrote a supernatural novel called "Eclipse," which is what that film is based on. By the transitive property of Hollywood Crush, both films are essentially the same. You're welcome.
