The writers of "The Vampire Diaries" really made up for last week's lack of Jeremy/Anna action with an episode that focused heavily on those two crazy kids. I missed them in the last episode, especially since this week's story culminated in an INSANE REVEAL that I didn't see coming ... in the slightest bit. Like, if I were to think about some crazy s--t that Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec were gonna pull, I would obviously do a terrible job since their plot twists probably even make soap opera writers think, "OMG, I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!" I never saw this one coming — at least not so early on in Jeremy's evolution as a character.
So, Jeremy got hip to the fact that Anna's a vampire. That's not terribly shocking — the little guy's pretty smart and was bound to eventually catch on to the fact that something is very, very different about Mystic Falls and the company he keeps. But instead of thinking about the VERY SUSPICIOUS OLDER-LOOKING MEN his sister hangs around with, he immediately went to the cute, mysterious girl who helped him with his homework. (Yeah, yeah, she's the one who told him about the vampires, but still.)
Instead of freaking out like a normal person, Jeremy decided to slice his own hand open and let Anna drink from it. Because that's logical. I know we're talking about vampires being real, so the Mystic Falls reality is different from our reality, but who in their right mind would think that is a sane thing to do around a bloodthirsty vampire? WHO?!
Confused, young Jeremy Gilbert, who wants to turn into a vampire himself, that's who. He's been messed up since Vicki's death/disappearance (and he knows something is up with that, since his fuzzy, Damon-altered memories are becoming a little clearer), so obviously he's trying to deal with that whole issue, but WANTING TO BECOME A VAMPIRE? He evidently hasn't really weighed the consequences of immortality or the ramifications of having to kill humans for food. I'm sure the masters Williamson and Plec will explore this plotline further in the coming weeks, but it was quite the shocker in an otherwise so-so episode.
The Elena/Stefan plot this week was kinda boring — double date with Matt and Caroline, jealousies abound ... and snooze. Wake me when something interesting happens. And the angry vampires being freed from the tomb doesn't count as interesting, at least not until next week when they kidnap and torture Stefan, since clearly they were gonna be pissed about being trapped in a tomb for so long. They spent last night's episode getting used to modern technology (like ATM cards and remote controls) and seething over the fact that the Salvatore brothers were responsible for their century-and-a-half-long imprisonment.
For the record, tomb vampire #1, Harper, is both adorable and nice (he even apologized to that hiker before killing him last week), tomb vampire #2, Frederick, is an asshat (he's the one who didn't listen to Pearl and decided to head into town and attack Stefan and Damon), and Pearl is just terrifying (must be that 400 years she has on the Salvatores that makes her so much tougher than everyone else).
Finally, Melinda Clarke continued to perfect that lovable combination of sarcasm and bitchery that made her so irresistible as Julie Cooper on "The OC." Please let her stick around for a while, casting gods. She and Ian Somerhalder both inject a playfulness into the "VD" melodrama that is both entertaining and necessary.
What did you think about last night's episode? Can you believe Jeremy's request? Were you unimpressed with this week's side plots, or did you find them integral to the story?
