Hello, old friends. Or should I say, Hell-o. After months of waiting, "Glee" hath returned to spread its good will, great music, and, well, Sue Sylvester. Things kicked off with Rachel, Kurt and Mercedes strutting down the halls of McKinley High School, certain that their win at Sectionals has solidified them amongst the cool kids in school. Of course, all three got a cold dose (in the form of the dreaded slushie) of reality right to the face.
Yes, all is exactly how we left it, including Sue, who has snaked her way back into school after being suspended for leaking the glee clubs set list to a rival school. After drugging and sexually blackmailing Principal Figgins (hey, no one ever accused her of fighting fair) Sue is back on the war path of taking down glee club and Mr. Schuester's self-confidence. Sue fired off her best impossible-to-come-back-from-one-liners at Will, including, "Hey buddy, get a haircut? Looks awful" and "I don't want to bury the hatchet unless I get a clear shot to your groin." If I wasn't laughing so hard, I'd probably be terrified of Sue.
Ducking for cover from Sue's lightning fast insults was hardly the only thing preoccupying Mr. Schue last night. The newly single Schue got hot and heavy with guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury. But, more on that later. First, Mr. Schue, determined to make sure New Directions do well at Regionals and keep glee club intact, assigned the kids try songs with "hello" in the title.
Finn, who, since we last saw him is now quasi-dating the very eccentric Rachel (admittedly, the date calendar she made of them dressed as kittens made me choke on my soda) and still heartbroken and embarrassed (not unlike Coach Tanaka, whom Finn compared to Jessica Simpson, in that he lost his fiancee, gained 40 pounds and stopped showering. Ouch, sorry Jess!) from his split with Quinn, was the first to take on the assignment. Finn belted out The Doors' classic "Hello, I Love You." Kurt looked like he might die from the all the sexiness in the number, and I can't say I blame him.
Kurt and Rachel weren't the only ones swooning over Finn, as Brittany and Santana made their move on the football-turned-glee member-turned-basketball star. Having fallen prey to the glitz and glamour of showbiz a very angry Sue insisted that the girls do their original job, which was to bring down glee club. The new plan included getting Rachel out of the club by way of seducing Finn. Finn, being a boy, bought the act, leaving Rachel crestfallen and belting out The All-American Rejects "Gives You Hell" with her gleemates.
Rachel wasn't sad for too long as she ran into Jesse St. James (Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele's former cast mate from their Broadway show "Spring Awakening"), a devilishly handsome boy with an angelic voice, who just so happens to be in rival club Vocal Adrenaline. The two, who within minutes of meeting each other break into Lionel Richie's ballad "Hello" (was anyone else baffled as to why there was a piano in the library?!), seemed destined for one another. But, there was just something about the smarmy Jesse (he bragged that he got into UCLA, "Maybe you've heard of it, its in Los Angeles") that simply couldn't be trusted.
As Jesse and Rachel's love blossomed, so did Mr. Schue and Emma's, but sadly not for very long. After revealing to Will that she is a virgin, Emma also came in face-to-face with Will's estranged wife Terri, who rained all over her parade. Terri, prying on Emma's insecurities, told her the song she and Will danced to, Neil Diamond's "Hello Again," was the very same one she and Will swayed to at their prom. All these "setbacks" made Emma tell Will it was time to take a step back from their new courtship and we really hope it's not the end for Will and Emma.
It could, however, be if Shelby Corcoran (guest star Idina Menzel) has anything to do with it. As Vocal Adrenalines teacher, Corcoran shares a steamy make-out session with Mr. Schue (while he was still with Emma, mind you! For shame, Schue!) and confides in him that he should spend some time alone, and when he does find himself, he should come find her, too.
In fact, shes gone so far as to make Jesse seduce Rachel (I knew it!), who has already been tormented by her fellow New Directions members for her new romance and scared to death by Sue Sylvester via an "Old Maids Club" (other members included girls who made out with their cats and watch "Ghost Whisperer") into wanting to be with him. Finn, realizing he lost a girl who really understood him, tries to win her back, but its clear Rachel only has eyes for Jesse now. While all that spelled trouble for our favorite glee club, they still wrapped the episode up wonderfully with the gang taking on The Beatles "Hello, Goodbye." At least now the goodbye isn't six months long.
What was your favorite part of last nights episode? Was Sues joke about Sarah Palin enough to make you laugh out loud? Do you think Mr. Schue and Ms. Corcoran will be making out again? What was your favorite musical number? Let us know, fellow Gleeks!
