There's nothing more damaging to a teen girl's reputation than the high school rumor mill. But it doesn't have to only be used for evil -- the rumor mill can do good too. Like in Emma Stone's new comedy, "Easy A." The first trailer for the movie, which opens on September 17, debuted yesterday, and it looks like a cute, new take on the high school sex comedy.
Emma plays Olive Penderghast, a girl who volunteers to have a pretend fling with her friend Brandon (Dan Byrd from "Cougar Town") so bullies will stop tormenting him for being gay. Olive and Brandon fake having sex at a party so their classmates will overhear, and the rumor spreads among their classmates like wildfire.
There's just one problem: the plan works a little too well. The rest of the kids in school brand Olive a slut — kind of like what happens to Hester Prynne in "The Scarlet Letter," which she's studying in English class. Instead of being ashamed of her new label, Olive decides to embrace it and starts wearing Hester's "A" (for adulterer) on her clothing, and agrees to have pretend sex with some of Brandon's friends to boost their reputations, too (and to make her wallet a little fatter).
The cast is chock full of famous people: Amanda Bynes, Cam Gigandet, Penn Badgley, Stanley Tucci, and Lisa Kudrow, to name a few, and an early reviewer called it "the female equivalent to 'Superbad.'" Sounds promising, though you can't really tell whether the film will be as raunchy as "Superbad" based on this clean-cut trailer alone.
What do you think of the "Easy A" trailer? Will you see the movie?
