When we had made the claim last month that Vanessa Hudgen's "Beastly" (which is getting us more and more excited with each trailer and featurette) would likely win the box office battle from Zac Efron's "Charlie St. Cloud" once it was announced they both would be released on July 30, we did so without the benefit of seeing a trailer for "Charlie" or really knowing what the film is about.
The trailer hit the Internet on Friday, and it has us thinking we might have to retract our claim.
Not that we're any less excited for "Beastly," mind you, but we think "Charlie" might be able to better reach across demographics in the middle of the summer. While we'll happily place our bets on there being few left in the United States who don't know the "Beauty and the Beast" tale, "Beastly's" modern take on the story might be a bit too "Twilight" for guys and older generations to be able to sit through.
"Charlie St. Cloud," on the other hand, has a story that can touch anyone's heart. The title character, played by Zac, loses his younger brother Sam (Charlie Tahan) in a car accident during his senior year of high school. He chooses to keep his promise to teach Sam how to play baseball until Charlie goes off to Stanford, but meeting a girl named Tess (Amanda Crew) threatens that oath as Charlie spends more time with her and less time with his brother's ghost.
Zac is definitely doing a good job of continuing to shed his "High School Musical" image with this film, and we're loving his performance from what we can see of it in the trailer.
