Sitting at my laptop, staring out the window at the New York City skyline just beyond my little piece of Queens, I have to admit I feel a little bit like Carrie. Granted I don’t live in Manhattan and I’m lacking Mr. Big, but after tonight, I couldn’t have felt more like one of the girls when I got my big chance to attend the "Sex and the City 2 premiere.
Around 5pm last night, I walked down 6th Ave toward one of the cities greatest venues. Never before have I set foot inside Radio City Music Hall, but tonight I would be walking in as a guest of one fabulous world premiere. As I drew closer to the theater, the New York City energy buzzed as fans of Carrie Bradshaw and her girlfriends waited to get their glimpse of Manhattan history. In true "Sex" style, this red carpet was not so red, but rather a diamond blue shade that screamed Carrie.
Standing in line, I couldn’t believe how casual the attendees were dressed! Of course there were a few glittery cocktail dresses, one exquisite dress that resembled the leg revealing gown Carrie is seen wearing during the film, and about a dozen more caused frocks, but aside from that there were a lot of jeans. It’s odd to think that you would see more "SATC"-inspired fashion walking the streets of New York on a nice day, than you would see at the actual films premiere — I totally expected it to be the opposite!
Once inside, I couldn’t wait to see the fashion the leading ladies would bring. I strategically stationed myself by one of the doors hoping to see the foursome before the screening, but as I crossed the floor, I walked right past another kind of New York staple: a "Gossip Girl." Michelle Trachtenberg was only three feet from me in a stunning red strapless cocktail dress that showed off a set of legs that would make any female shy of five feet jealous. Shortly following the encounter, it was time to find our seats.
When the lights dimmed, there was a roar of cheers as writer/director Michael Patrick King took the stage to introduce the “Sex Family." I had to pinch myself when I realized I was in the same room as Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker. These ladies sure know how to dress! Kristen was by far my favorite in a vintage Jean Desses pink strapless gown that was so Charlotte, but as far as the characters go, I still stand by my girl Samantha.
As I watched "SATC 2," I adored the fact that these strong, witty ladies have not changed a bit. Bringing a serious amount of fashion, exquisite locations and a whole lot of “good Sex," these girls proved they've still got it. Apparently, even with mature subject matter like marriage and kids, "SATC" is still just as relatable as it was back when the ladies were thirtysomething and prowling the town for men. Just ask the next generation of Carries, Samanthas, Mirandas and Charlottes who I watched exit Radio City arm in arm as they crossed the street back to whatever direction home was — it's obvious that Carrie Bradshaw will always have a place in our hearts.
