Despite "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy's last claim that the second season of Fox's hit television show would focus on the story instead of having a string of famous guest stars, the latest news is that he will be pulling out the big Hollywood guns by having Academy Award winner Javier Bardem make at least one appearance on the show.
This comes after the news that John Stamos will be appearing early on as a dentist who is a love interest for guidance counselor Emma (Jayma Mays), as well as a hoped-for performance by Susan Boyle as a lunch lady. It can also be assumed that Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth and (fingers crossed) Molly Shannon will reprise their roles a few more times.
The Javier Bardem casting came out of his working with Ryan on the Julia Roberts flick "Eat Pray Love," which Ryan wrote and directed. Apparently Javier is a big fan of the show (he watched the entire first season in one week) and pitched the idea of him coming in as a rock star who befriends Artie (Kevin McHale), an idea which Ryan clearly accepted.
Javier told EW's Michael Ausiello, "We're going to rock the house. We're going to do some heavy metal -- Spanish heavy metal, which is the worst."
At first glance, this casting seems like a really interesting and, let's face it, awesome idea, but the fans seem to be responding differently. A quick look at comments on the EW website shows that people are sick of "Glee's" nonstop string of guest stars, and want to go back to seeing what made the show a hit: really talented no-name performers that viewers have learned to love.
What do you guys think? Would you prefer that "Glee" keeps bringing in guest stars, or that it goes back to the original formula in the first half of season one that made it a hit to begin with?
