Last night in the final scene of "The Hills" the curtains finally lifted and the set fell apart seemingly implying that the "reality" show we had watched for six seasons was all a setup. Or was it? We've been grappling with the question all day (we know you have too!) and the cast certainly didn't help clear anything up in the post-show.
"The thing is, as you saw on the end — what's real and what's fake, you don't know," Brody Jenner insisted. Fair enough, Jenner. But we've been avid viewers over the years, and you know what? There are some stories we're convinced had to be real. So, fellow "Hills" fans, if you've got your doubts, we've compiled a list of moments for you that we think just have to be legit.
1. THE LAUREN-HEIDI FRIENDSHIP
No matter what anyone says, there's NO WAY this friendship and the subsequent falling out could have been scripted. The bond that these two shared (at least before Spencer stepped into the picture) reminded us of our relationships with our bffs — something real, something natural. Of course, that all fell apart as Heidi got more involved with Spence, and the tension between the two girls was palpable. Case in point, the infamous "you know what you did" fight, when Lauren accuses Heidi of spreading rumors about her. Was it the best line ever? Yes! Was it scripted? We doubt it ... we could practically feel Lauren's sense of betrayal on our couches at home.
2. LAUREN-LO-AUDRINA ROOMMATE DRAMA
We're not sure that Lauren, Audrina Patridge and Lo Bosworth came up with the idea to move into a posh-mini-mansion together entirely on their own (well played producers), but we're pretty sure they didn't plan for the drama that would follow. Lauren and Lo's longstanding friendship made Audrina feel like an outcast, and Lauren felt torn. The climax of the roommate triangle hit an emotional high when Lauren went over to the guest house to hash things out with Audrina, and ended up crying tears of black mascara! Come on now, if that entire scene had been setup the girl definitely would have been smart enough to grab some waterproof mascara and/or stop filming and fix her makeup.
3. LAUREN AND JASON'S BREAKUP
We watched Lauren's relationship with Jason Wahler start and end on "Laguna Beach." So, when he made his grand return on "The Hills," we weren't completely surprised ... after all, exes always have a way of coming back around. Of course, they also have a way of breaking your heart, and that's exactly what happened to Lauren after she ditched Paris to spend the summer with her man. With a major breakup comes a point when you have to return the guy's stuff, and while the cameras might have been rolling as Lauren handed Jason a box filled with memories, so were her tears. And, we bought every last one.
4. HEIDI'S FALLING OUT WITH HER FAMILY
Of all the characters on the show, Heidi went through the most (physical) changes and we're convinced that her family's reactions to each of them was real. While it's hard to imagine your boyfriend ever talking to your mom the way that Spencer talked to Darlene, we can't fathom that sweet momma Montag would ever publicly battle Spencer just for the sake of the cameras. For that reason (not to mention her shocked reaction to Heidi's plastic surgery), we just have to trust that Darlene's distress was the real deal.
5. BRODY AND LAUREN'S RELATIONSHIP
In last night's post-show, Brody teased that his entire relationship with Kristin might have been an act. While we're still debating that one, his comments did cast a cloud of doubt on his semi-relationship with Lauren, too. The two had that whole on-again, off-again thing going on, but always seemed to connect better as friends. So, was the rest of it fake? Enter Jen Bunny to save the day. Remember when Lauren flipped out at her for breaking the cardinal rule of friendship and making moves on Brody? They actually lost their friendship over it and that definitely wouldn't have happened unless Lauren had some real feelings for the Brodster.
Would you agree that the moments we listed above had to have come from a real place on "The Hills"? What other ones would you add to this list?
