One of the movies we're most looking forward to in the coming year is Darren Aronofky's "Black Swan," mostly because of how little we know about it. The film stars Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Winona Ryder in a ballet dancer drama that many are describing as a psychological thriller somewhere along the lines of "Fight Club."
But when MTV's Rick Marshall shared the comparison with Natalie at Comic-Con when she was promoting her upcoming superhero flick, "Thor," she thought "Black Swan" was better compared with another famous psychological thriller.
"I think of it more as a psychological thriller, like a 'Rosemary's Baby' genre, if I had to pick a genre," she said, adding that it's "very unique in tone."
For those of you not familiar with Roman Polanski's 1968 classic, the titular Rosemary and her husband move in to a new apartment next to some creepy older neighbors, and the film follows her mental deterioration after she believes her husband plotted with the neighbors to impregnate her with the Antichrist.
"Black Swan" is about a veteran ballerina, Nina (Natalie) who ends up being in competition with newcomer Lily (Mila) after the lead ballerina Beth (Winona) needs to be replaced for the opening production of Swan Lake. Nina ends up being cast as the White Swan (representative of innocence and grace) while Lily is the Black Swan (representative of guile and sensuality). Nina and Lily end up turning their rivalry into a twisted friendship, and Nina starts traveling down a darker road that might destroy her.
It was recently announced that "Black Swan" would open the Venice Film Festival, as well as the Toronto Film Festival, which both occur in September. "We're really excited about it. We just found out that we're opening Venice," she had told us.
