Big news today: "Going The Distance" has been pushed back a week to be released on September 3 instead of August 27. You might find yourself asking, "What movie is that?" to which we can only answer, "Exactly." If "Going The Distance" has had a marketing campaign set to rival the other big August romance releases like "Eat Pray Love" and "The Switch," then we have yet to see it.
Is it a big deal that "Going The Distance" has been pushed back a week? Not really. The only other big film that is coming out that day is "Machete," which also hasn't had the biggest marketing campaign to speak of and is aiming for an entirely different audience.
Our only question is about why they made the shift. I mean, were they really feeling the competition from "Takers" and "The Last Exorcism," which also come out on the 27th? Or maybe it was the fact that "Eat Pray Love" and "The Switch" seem slated to do much better in theaters because people have been seeing advertisements around for a bit longer than they've been seeing anything on "Going The Distance."
Hopefully New Line will take the extra week to pump up promotion of what we're expecting to be a good movie, and the move will only help "Going The Distance" do well. Drew Barrymore films and Justin Long films always tend to do fairly well in box office revenue, and the fact that they're dating and doing a film about long distance relationships should be the extra bow on top of this nice little package.
What do you think about the release date shift for "Going The Distance"? Do you think it was a smart or stupid move?
