Let's face it, with the exception of "Inception," "Eclipse" and "Toy Story 3," this has been a pretty lackluster summer movie season. In fact, the most successful films of the season were sequels, animated films, remakes and 3D movies — or some combination of the four.
What's especially noteworthy is that none of those top films leaned solely on one star to do the box office heavy lifting. Now, some of the summer's latecomers, which do rely on one marquee name, are not fairing so well at the box office — not to mention taking a bit of the shine off of some of our favorite stars. The most recent film to fall into this trap was Jennifer Aniston's "The Switch," which many are predicting will be her weakest box office performance to date.
Is this the end of the former "Friends"' film career as we know it? Hit the jump to see what we think Jen's — and other summer stars' — box office bankability will be in the coming months.
JENNIFER ANISTON
Box office highlight: "Bruce Almighty" ($242,829,261)
Summer miss: "The Switch," opening weekend $8,436,713
Recent misses: "Love Happens," "Management"
Upcoming flicks: 2011's "Just Go With It" has a good chance to do well at the box office, thanks to its February 11 release date and leading man Adam Sandler. "Horrible Bosses" might be a little bit more of a toss up, but it could be next summer's sleeper comedy thanks to its A-list ensemble cast featuring Jason Bateman, Kevin Spacey and Colin Farrell.
Consensus: Jennifer's star will continue to shine whether her movies flop or not. And she always will have a free ride on television for as long as she is interested.
MEGAN FOX
Box office highlight: "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" ($402,111,870)
Summer miss: "Jonah Hex," opening weekend $5,379,365
Recent misses: "Jennifer's Body," "How To Lose Friends And Alienate People"
Upcoming flicks: Mickey Rourke called Megan the "best young actress I've ever worked with," which is always a good selling point for their upcoming "Passion Play."
Consensus: The critical reception of "Passion Play" will most likely make-or-break Megan's shot at being a big box office draw, and make her reevaluate her decision to leave "Transformers 3."
ZAC EFRON
Box office highlight: "Hairspray" ($118,871,849)
Summer miss: "Charlie St. Cloud," opening weekend $12,381,585
Recent misses: "Me and Orson Welles"
Upcoming flicks: Zac will take a turn as the lead in Nicholas Sparks' "The Lucky One" opposite the recently announced Taylor Schilling.
Consensus: It's not that Zac's films do poorly at the box office, it's that they haven't yet catapulted him to dependable-money-maker status since his split with Disney. He is sure to be around for a while, but his success over the next few years will shape how long his career will last.
MICHAEL CERA
Box office highlight: "Juno" ($143,495,265)
Summer miss: "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World," opening weekend $10,609,795
Recent misses: "Youth in Revolt," "Year One," "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist"
Upcoming flicks: Nothing, really. He has the will-it-ever-be-made "Arrested Development" film on his docket and is maybe being looked at for a "Gilligan's Island" movie remake that probably won't happen.
Consensus: Let's face it, people are getting a bit of Michael Cera fatigue. He's not a leading man in the traditional sense, and he hasn't quite brought in the audience that studios have hoped for, geeky or not. We think he should stick to supporting roles for a while and hope the "Arrested Development" movie boosts him back into box office glory.
JULIA ROBERTS
Box office highlight: "Pretty Woman" ($178,406,268)
Summer miss: "Eat Pray Love," opening weekend $23,104,523
Recent misses: "Duplicity," "Charlie Wilson's War," "Closer"
Upcoming flicks: She is returning to work with Tom Hanks as the female lead in the 2011 comedy "Larry Crowne" that he directed, co-wrote and starred in. She also has about a million and a half films potentially in development.
Consensus: Julia is America's sweetheart, and no matter how many flops she has, studios and audiences will always come back for more.
What are your thoughts on this summer's biggest misses? Do you think these actors will hit the top again?
