It's hard to watch "Life Unexpected" without knowing in the back of your mind that the show is hanging by a thread. Do we savor these last moments with the world’s worst parents and risk getting further attached? Or do we begin siding with the network execs and kick a show when it’s down? A little bit of both won’t hurt I suppose.
What I want to hold on to: I have to admit, Baze and Emma are pretty cute. They continued to talk about going on a date and then just made out and got real hot-n-heavy in a random motor vehicle instead (last week was a bus, this week a car). That is, until Emma got a mysterious phone call about a burst pipe. Let’s cut to the chase: there was no burst pipe. And there was no man, no long-lost lover. Emma has a troubled son whose dad unexpectedly dropped him off at her house. But luckily she isn’t just making out with any old assistant, she is making out with Baze and when Baze says, "The kid on the doorstep thing I get," you know he really, literally means it. He got a kid on his doorstep. I mean how many boyfriends are you going to hear that from? No wonder she’s falling in love.
Ryan and Cate continued to work on/sabotage their marriage by going to therapy and then going their separate ways to get drunk and hang out same-sex style. Boys chugged beers while Cate and Paige took a vodka shot at a bar. (Is this a developing theme where Cate is constantly buying drinks to get girls to hang out with her?) Cate danced and took her bra off during "strip pool" until Ryan showed up to take her home. (Thank god I don’t live in Portland—is that really what the bars are like!?) At the therapist suggestion, Ryan and Cate decide to take some time apart and guess where Ryan goes to stay? Yup, Baze’s. Does Ryan really not have one friend of his own? That’s just sad.
Why this show is failing: And while the adults were busy being interesting and drunk and confrontational, Lux was gallivanting around some sleepy, secret Northwest coastal island with her illegal teacher boyfriend, because hanging out at Tasha’s apartment wasn’t good enough. It was one thing when Eric and Lux were privately crushing on each other and keeping it a secret—that was cute—but involving another student and using her orphan-status apartment for their private love shack turned the whole relationship seedy. And of course, when Eric and Lux "go public" and hold hands on their island, they miss the last ferry and are "forced" to spend the night in a hotel room together. *cough cough* And how do they pay for the room after Eric "loses" his wallet? Why by taking advantage of Tasha again! Lux is officially the worst friend and her "I’m doing it all for love" ploy, when we know she is just "doing it all for a father figure," is kind of gross. She lets Tasha take the blame for the hotel charge on Cate’s card and then invites Eric over again (and kicks Tasha out) to tell him how much she likes him.
Let's just say it: Lux is a horrible, unlikable character.
Now let’s talk about scenes from next week where we discover Lux has possible brain damage and we meet the man who beat her. Man, it’s hard to stay mad. Is that the trick to this show?! Maybe it'll work.
