When Ian Somerhalder told MTV News a couple of weeks ago that a Damon and Elena (Nina Dobrev) romance was just a "pipe dream," he unwittingly broke the hearts of Delena fans everywhere. Then last week, as if to rub salt into the still open (and very painful!) wound, Damon effectively gave up the fight for E when he declared his love for her only to make her forget it moments later. Needless to say, it's been a tough ride. But Delena fans shouldn't give up hope just yet.
When MTV News caught up with Nina last week, we asked her whether she agreed with Ian's "pipe dream" statement, and her answer wasn't as definitive as you might guess.
"I think with the way things have been going lately, Damon has just royally screwed up everything, and he just keeps digging his grave deeper and deeper. Elena tries to be neutral around him, but everything she associates with Damon is bad," Nina said, echoing sentiments shared by Ian and show writer Kevin Williamson. But then, Nina elaborated on the connection between the two characters and gave us some insight we certainly hadn't heard before.
"They have an undeniable chemistry and a undeniable je ne sais quoi. There’s something there that neither of them can really put their finger on—well at least Elena can’t," Nina explained.
While Miss Dobrev clarified that she doesn't know if anything actually develops between D and E since she hasn't filmed that far in advance, she did add that Elena may not be ready to face whatever connection the two characters share.
"She doesn’t want to admit it to herself, and she doesn’t want to go there because right now she’s so in love and torn with Stefan that she doesn’t even think about that at all."
Speaking of Stefan (Paul Wesley), his relationship with Elena hasn't exactly been smooth sailing as of late. Last we left the couple, they seemed to still be on a "break." We asked Nina if the two would patch things up anytime soon, and her answer was much more vague than what she had to say about Damon.
"Everyone’s just going to have to tune in and watch and see if Elena and Stefan make it," she teased.
