If there were an international award for "Most Expertly Evasive Interviewee," it would go to Ryan Gosling. And if you don't believe us, just watch him as he dodges and weaves when questioned about his effect on women! In this interview with MTV's Josh Horowitz, Ryan was asked up-front to explain just how he became such a universal object of female desire—lusted after by women including us, Josh's wife, and all of his female friends.
But don't look for an answer; Ryan turns the question on its head in record time, replying, "Where are these friends of yours? You could be lying. You're not blinking, which makes me feel like you're lying."
Josh blinks in an attempt to prove his sincerity, but Ryan comes back again: "But now, because I told you, it means less. You cheapened it."
All right, enough. Answer the question, Gosling! Every woman in the world is obviously in love with you. As evidenced, Josh points out, by the fact that all human ladies are physically incapable of flipping past "The Notebook" without stopping to watch it.
Ryan's response: "I'll say this: I think that 'Blue Valentine' is a nice companion piece to 'The Notebook.'"
Dear politicians everywhere: You and your talking points have nothing on Ryan Freakin' Gosling. Seriously, the man's ability to answer the question he wanted—and not the one actually asked—is uncanny.
But hey, we'll bite. "Blue Valentine" as a "The Notebook" followup? Tell us more.
"I feel like both are true," he explains. "They're both possible. And...the truth is somewhere in the middle. I feel like 'Blue Valentine' kind of picks up where 'The Notebook' leaves off, you know, there's a huge period of time which isn't in that film. The practical day-to-day of living with one another isn't dealt with in that film."
Okay, wait a sec. They're both possible? So you're saying that we, too, could become part of a glorious romance that leads to an epic in-the-rain make-out, a lifelong marriage, and an untimely demise from Alzheimer's disease? YES!
But Ryan says he's not kidding: "I would meet people, when I did 'The Notebook', who would come up to me on the street and say, 'That happened to me'—or, 'That's my parents story'. People were saying that it's not realistic, that love doesn't happen for people like that. But that's not true."
Which is a nice thought, really. It's so nice that even though Ryan wouldn't explain how his mojo works with the women of the world, we'll forgive him anyway. Carry on.
