With 2011 mere heartbeats away, we couldn't help but reminisce about our favorite portrayals of New Year's Eve on the silver screen. Cinematically, the New Year is a symbol for new beginnings, as exemplified by our top five NYE moments below. If your plans are more of the cuddle-by-the-fire than shimmy-at-the-club variety, consider popping one of these faves into your DVD player to appropriately say sayonara to 2010.
Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens in "High School Musical"
Our favorite Disney couple, Troy (Zac Efron) and Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens), meets at a New Year’s Eve party. They're both tentative when the host picks them for karaoke, but by the end of "Start of Something New," it's obvious these two lovebirds were made to sing and dance together. Oh, Zac and Vanessa, "Get'cha Head in the Game" and get back together!
Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet in "A Lot Like Love"
After meeting on a plane (and joining the mile high club), Emily (Amanda Peet) calls Oliver (Ashton Kutcher) in a bout of New Year's Eve loneliness. Thus begins a long-distance friendship that develops into true love. Aww!
Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon in "Sex and the City: The Movie"
In a touching moment of girl power, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) races across Manhattan on a snowy New Year's Eve to ring in the new year with Miranda (Cynthia Nixon). She arrives just before the ball drops, and the two lonely BFFs share a special moment, realizing that as long as they have each other, they’ll never be alone.
Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jack Black and Jude Law in "The Holiday"
This 2006 love story concludes with the two happy couples celebrating New Year's Eve together. It's a heartwarming ending to a perfect little rom-com.
Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal in "When Harry Met Sally"
"When Harry Met Sally" is hands-down my favorite movie of all time, mostly due to Harry's (Billy Crystal) romantic New Year's Eve confession of love to his bestie, Sally (Meg Ryan). The latter half of Harry’s proclamation is as follows: "I love that you're the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." Sigh.
