Music from the motion picture? Not this time: In a bizarre twist on the usual order of things, news cropped up today that Miley Cyrus' retro-fab video for Rock Mafia's "The Big Bang" (also co-starring "Gossip Girl" actor Kevin Zegers) will likely become a feature-length film in the near future, making it one of the first ever movies based on a music video.
Hey, makes sense: We've been salivating over the potential of videos' petite plotlines and concise character arcs ever since the three-minute romance between a girl and her comic book in the video for "Take On Me." And if this is how it works now, we've got five more music videos we'd like to see stretched out to feature length. Check it after the jump!
1. "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift
The setup for Taylor's country-pop hit, in which a band geek struggles with her unrequited love for the popular jock, is the perfect treatment for a fluffy teenage romance. Even better: Add in the fact that Taylor plays both the pining geek and the bitchy cheer captain, and you've got the potential for "Black Swan" levels of weirdness.
2. "California Gurls" by Katy Perry
In a post-apocalyptic fantasy world, a lavender-wigged Katy tries to negotiate a terrifying candy landscape and overthrow an evil, omnipotent dictator played by Snoop Dogg. Sounds like a movie to us! Sort of like "Sucker Punch," but with gummi bears.
3. "Oops!...I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
There's definite film-worthiness in the concept of Britney as an evil Martian queen who lures unsuspecting astronauts into her lair, cons them into giving her extravagant jewelry and then cruelly rejects them via interpretive dance... but really, we just want to see Brit-Brit put on that red latex jumpsuit again.
4. "Telephone" by Lady Gaga ft. Beyoncé
Who wouldn't want to see more of the backstory behind Lady Gaga's awesome video? There are so many unanswered questions—like, why did she poison those dudes? And where'd she get the Pussy Wagon? And what kind of Thelma-and-Louise weirdness is going on between her and Beyoncé? And where is this incredibly fashionable jail, and if we commit an awesome enough crime, can we go there?!
5. "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)" by Meat Loaf
It's an oldie, but you can't beat the setup: a classic Beauty and the Beast conundrum, with Meat Loaf as the (vaguely Klingon-looking) Beast. We'd love to see this musical drama come to life on the big screen—preferably in the hands of Michael Bay, who directed the original video. And maybe, just maybe, a feature-length film will answer the question on everyone's mind: He'll do anything for love, but he won't do... WHAT?! Seriously, tell us already. It's been 17 years.
