A few weeks back, MTV News' Josh Horowitz chatted with 14-year-old "True Grit" star Hailee Steinfeld about the building buzz surrounding her and a certain "Hunger Games" role. (I think you know which part I'm talking about—ahem, Katniss—but if you're still unclear, check out Josh's interview with Hailee.)
Now, I'll admit when I first heard this suggestion my initial reaction was, "I'm not so sure..." but then I watched "True Grit" over the Christmas holiday. And I'm sold.
Hailee stars in the Western as no-nonsense Mattie Ross, an avenging angel of a teen looking to bring her father's murderer to justice with the help of Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon. Mattie is fearless, determined and willing to risk it all for her family...sound familiar?
Hailee's scored plenty of accolades from critics and fans alike, securing nominations from both the Critics' Choice Movie Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards (could an Oscar nod be far off?). Her spot-on resemblance to District 12's scrappy contender and her obvious acting chops shoot her to the top ranks of my Katniss casting wishlist (even if she is a year or two younger than our heroine).
But what do you think? Do you agree that Hailee would make a good Katniss? Josh recently caught back up with the actress at the National Board of Review Gala to see if any progress has been made on landing the role. Click play on the video above to hear what Hailee had to say!
Have you seen "True Grit"? Were you impressed by Hailee Steinfeld?
