We're only a little over three months away from the release of "Water for Elephants," and though there was some extra footage shot over the weekend, the film is generally in its final stages. So far we've only seen one theatrical trailer, but an international trailer hit the web that shows more footage than we've seen so far.
This trailer doesn't differ from the original until about halfway through (barring the change in music, which we will get to in a bit). Is it just me or did anyone else get chills when that little girl gasps at the 1:22 mark after Marlena shows off a magnificent horse trick? This is definitely a film we're looking forward to.
There's about 20 seconds of additional footage in this trailer, and the highlight is most certainly peeking more of Jacob (Robert Pattinson) and Marlena's (Reese Witherspoon) illicit relationship. They share a chaste kiss before men storm into their bedroom and drag Jacob away. Then we see him about to be tossed off a train by a bunch of burly men (don't ruin his pretty face, guys!).
Christoph Waltz's August is also positioned as more of a villain than in the previous trailer. His face is always juxtaposed with bad things happening to Marlena and Jacob—including a scene where August attacks Jacob at the circus—and we also see a shot of Marlena lying on top of the elephant Rosie, who looks to be hurt. And that shot of Marlena riding on top of Rosie during a performance? Breathtaking.
Another major difference is that this trailer features the song "Please Don't Go" by Barcelona instead of the dramatic score in the original trailer, and it definitely gives "Water for Elephants" a different feel. The music is less magical and foreboding yet more heartbreaking, and it will be interesting to see if it actually makes it into a cut of the film. While I think the first trailer's soundtrack matches the film a bit better than Barcelona, I definitely was a fan of the effect it had on the storytelling and would be happy seeing it as a song played during the credits.
