Once Catherine Hardwicke's gothic re-imagining of the classic "Little Red Riding Hood" fairy tale hits theaters (today, people!), the imaginative helmer will have a fairly open schedule—with no shortage of rumored projects in the early stages of pre-production.
One film we're definitely keeping our eyes on is the big-screen adaptation of James Dashner's dystopian YA novel "The Maze Runner." The last we heard, the "Twilight" director was in negotiations to bring the glade to life and "The Buried Life" executive producer Noah Oppenheim had signed on as the screenwriter. So when MTV News' Josh Horowitz caught up with Catherine at the junket for "Red Riding Hood," he tried to weasel a bit of scoop out of her. (Emphasis on tried—that Catherine is a pro at giving vague answers!)
"That's a fun one that we're working on right now," she said of "Maze Runner." "We're working on the script and the visual ideas of that. That would be cool."
With her production designer background, it's no surprise Catherine is excited to bring Thomas' complicated world to life.
"Instead of going back in the past or being in the literal present, we're going to the future," she said. "So that one is really creating a very stunning visual world. And intensity for the characters because of the mystery they're dealing with."
But whether or not "Maze Runner" is Catherine's next project (or whether it's "Hamlet" starring Emile Hirsch or "Maximum Ride" or "The Monkey Wrench Gang") all depends on the dollars.
"Um, you never know," she teased. "If the movie gods drop the pile of money—you never know."
