CrushNotes: Everything You Need To Know About Best-Seller 'Something Borrowed'

Posted 4/29/11 11:57 am EST by Aly Semigran in CrushNotes, Movies, Page Turners

Hollywood Crush loves a good book—and so do moviemakers, seeing as more than a few of our favorite reads are headed for the silver screen. With so many adaptations in the works, keeping the ol' reading list current is harder than ever, which is where CrushNotes comes in! We give you the low-down on books before they hit the big screen.

Who needs something old and something new, when you've got the film adaptation of "Something Borrowed" hitting theaters in a week?! On May 6, fans of Emily Giffin's 2005 novel about the complexities of love and friendship will finally get to see their favorite characters come to life on the big screen. It's not often you read a book where you're rooting for a girl who has just slept with her best friend's fiance (and trust us when we say you will), but then again, this isn't your run-of-the-mill "chick lit." Here's what you should know about the page-turner before the movie comes to theaters next Friday!

Characters you need to know: There's the every girl Rachel: a smart, beautiful but reserved New York City attorney who is best friends with the gorgeous Darcy, who is the life of the party but also very self-involved. Darcy is engaged to the handsome and sweet Dex, one of Rachel's former NYU classmates whom she's always harbored a crush on (turns out, he has had one on her too!). Finally, there's Ethan, a friend of both Darcy and Rachel who acts as the voice of reason when things turn...well...complicated.

Plot Synopsis: On the night of her 30th birthday party, Rachel finds herself in a place she thought she'd never be: in bed with her best friend Darcy's fiance Dex. Over the next few weeks a conflicted Rachel and Dex fall deeper in love, while an oblivious Darcy—who has always been rather oblivious to everyone but herself—ponders if she really even wants to get married in the first place. As the wedding looms, friendships are put to the test (including one with the girls' mutual pal Ethan), and love tries to endure the trickiest of circumstances.

Stars: Ginnifer Goodwin, who made single girls everywhere want to stand up and cheer in "He's Just Not That Into You," will take on the part of good girl in a major life crisis, Rachel. Kate Hudson will embody Rach's hard-to-love BFF Darcy, while Colin Egglesfield will play the devastatingly handsome and charming (hey, if the shoe fits...) Dex. John Krasinski will all but lock down everyone's collective crush on him when he plays Rachel's funny and sweet confidante Ethan. And just in case that wasn't enough star power for you, Oscar-winner Hilary Swank is co-executive producing the flick.

A scene from the book that must be in the film: While Dex and Rachel's first kiss is essential, there's another scene between the two that really tugged at our hearts. In the throes of their love affair, Dex buys Rachel a pair of dice while the pair spend an afternoon together out in Manhattan. The cute gesture may have seemed small, but it represented something much larger: the huge gamble they are taking with themselves, their love lives and with Darcy. When Dex urges Rachel to roll the dice in the middle of the street to see if her lucky numbers come up, you can almost feel the tension jump right off the page.

What the film's got over the book: That cast! Not only have you got two top-notch actresses (Kate and Ginnifer) who have worked their magic in rom-coms before, but you've got some serious eye candy going on with Colin and John. These characters are not only lovably complicated, but incredibly authentic, so it will be fun to actually watch all their personalities breathe new life on the big screen.

Have you read Emily Giffin's "Something Borrowed"? Are you as excited for the film adaptation as we are? Tell us in the comments and on Twitter!
