We'd heard a whisper or two that Sarah Jessica Parker — whose name will be forever entwined with "Sex and the City" and its leading lady, Carrie Bradshaw — wasn't too psyched about the possibility of her beloved franchise getting tapped for a prequel. (Her reaction, reported by Vulture after rumors circled earlier this winter that Blake Lively would be playing a high-school-aged, pre-NYC Carrie: "Whaaaaaaaat?!") But when we caught up with SJP at Cannes and asked if she's still feeling less-than-thrilled about turning back the clock on "SATC," the actress' expression of surprise was pretty much second-to-none (I mean wow, her eyeballs practically fling themselves out of her head!).
"I think it always comes down to story," she explained after a hasty protest and the warning that she can't really discuss what may or may not be happening next. "What is the story that people want to tell?"
Of course, it's natural that the actress feels a sense of ownership over the character she brought to life — and who became a cultural icon in her own right. "I feel proprietary, in the best possible way, about that entire franchise," she admitted. "But I think there are lots of talented storytellers, and lots of talented actors who might be part of it, and I think like anything you base your opinion on material and content. And that would be the only way for any of us to have an opinion."
And while the possibility of a prequel film is nothing but a rumor at this point, Sarah will say that she can envision an epilogue to the "SATC" franchise before putting it to out to pasture.
"I think there is perhaps one more small, important story to tell," she explained. "Whether or not we choose to do that, or when we choose to do that is unknown, but it's nice to ponder."
So... what'll it be? "Sex and the Suburbs"? "Sex and the Shuffleboard Court"? "Sex and the Cemetery"?! Apparently, it's anyone's guess.
"I don't," Sarah said when asked whether she knows just where the famous foursome might pick up again for a last chapter of the franchise. "But somebody else does!"
