It seems like just yesterday we were being introduced to the Hellcats crew of Lancer University, and Tuesday night our favorite cheer team closed out the season and the series for good. (ICYMI, The CW canceled the show yesterday.) Of course, the entire season was centered around going to nationals, and the finale kicked off with lots of sweat, sport bras and strep throat!
The Hellcats are plagued with a nasty bug and suddenly finds themselves with just enough members to compete. All the healthy cheerleaders are required to slumber party in the gym, and Marti thinks this is a great time to invite her half-sister Deirdre to hang out. Savannah comes on too strong when Marti introduces her, Deirdre freaks out and starts playing guitar with Travis Guthrie (why was he there? I have no idea!) and tells Marti the whole cheer thing is a pathetic scene. Marti calls out her bad attitude then invites Deirdre to be her guest to nationals. Surprisingly, Deirdre agrees.
Red's ex-wife, Emily, is determined to make life hell for Vanessa. She shows up at the cheer sleepover, makes passive aggressive comments about Vanessa in front of Lewis and leaves with a creepy smile. Vanessa doesn't give Emily's scorned woman ways a second thought because she has to to get her team to Nationals!
The Hellcats make it to Atlanta to compete where everything seems to be going smoothly until they start practicing. It's a huge mess with alternates filling in for the people who are sick. One Hellcat falls and breaks her arm. Then Charlotte goes into labor and demands Savannah be at the hospital leaving exactly enough people to compete.
THEN, Nasty Cathy decides to corner Lewis and confront him about why he hasn't returned her texts. Lewis tells Cathy he's back with Alice, turning her into a super psycho ex-GF! While lunching with Alice and her family, Lewis gets a mystery call and has to leave with promises to be back in time to compete. Lewis shows up to Cathy's hotel room to find her drunk and naked in bed upset over Lewis being with Alice again…or so she wants Lewis to think. She borrows his jacket, sends him to the bathroom for aspirin, locks him in, goes on a psycho rant about him being a pig then turns on music really loud before she takes off with a "do not disturb" sign on the hotel room door. Hahaha….wow! Cathy is amazing!
After Savannah leaves for the hospital, Deirdre says she sucks to do that to the team. She accuses Marti of not being a caring sister, calls her a liar and OMG…storms off again. Big surprise. Marti confronts Deirdre on why she is pushing her away. They have a verbal fight, they hug, they bond and suddenly they are no longer estranged family.
With Lewis missing, Alice starts harassing Savannah on the phone begging her to come back since the team doesn't have enough people to compete. Savannah says she can't leave her sister since the baby will be a premie. This doesn't sit well with Alice who tries to guilt her, and Savannah hangs up on her.
Fortunately, Lewis manages to get himself out of the bathroom and hitchhikes back to Nationals where he of course makes it just in time! Oh wait…it can't be that easy. An anonymous tip was called in that one of the Hellcats has strep, so the first aid crew comes in to check everyone before they compete. Too bad three people tested positive and the Hellcats are disqualified! WHAAAAT! Didn't see that coming.
Alice tells the Hellcats they need to perform even if the competition is over. As artists (yes, that's what they are calling themselves now) they have the right to take the stage. So they perform for the janitors, Alice's parental units and random cheerleaders who show up out of no where to dance and perform with them. Ummm, yeah.
Back at Lancer a week later they have an after party. Savannah steps down as captain so she can help out her family more and hands the position over to Alice who cries and shows a soft side…for once.
Turns out Emily is a bigger bitch than we thought. She called in the tip to get back at Vanessa and settle her personal grudge. Emily admits it to the head of Lancer trustees, and he says he'll side with her if she becomes romantically involved. Of course Emily agrees. She's getting everything she wants! The head of trustees and Emily meet with Vanessa and fire her for neglecting the team's well being. I guess the saying is true, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned."
With only minutes left in the finale, Marti and Deirdre are hanging out when Deirdre's phone rings. Marti answers it and it's their dad Rex! Marti freaks out, hangs up, screams at Deirdre to go back to her life, grabs her bike and rides off into a dark and stormy night.
And that's it, "Hellcats" fans. That's how our season-long foray into the world of pom pom
