The British are coming! The British are coming! (Albeit in sparkling gowns and classic tuxes instead of battle-worn red coats.)
Deadline is reporting that Prince William and Kate Middleton will make a stop in Hollywood during their impending U.S. trip to help kick-off the inaugural BAFTA Brits To Watch event on July 9. (Besides the newlyweds being British—obviously—Wills is apparently the president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Who knew?)
With the royals readying themselves to land in our most hallowed movie-making land, it stands to reason that we should prepare ourselves for the British invasion, cinematically. Luckily, Hollywood Crush has curated a handy viewing guide to get you in the monarchy mindset.
1. "Coming to America" (1988)
The quintessential prince-out-of-water tale stars Eddie Murphy as Akeem Joffer, the heir to an African throne who escapes his homeland to find a suitable wife in the U.S. He fittingly settles in Queens, New York, and takes a menial job at fast food joint McDowell's (sound familiar?). Sure, the 1988 comedy might be older than the bulk of our readership, but that doesn't make the flick any less uproyalious.
2. "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement" (2004)
Either "Princess Diaries" movie would do in a pinch, but with the sequel's wedding plot line, it seems the most fitting choice to prepare for the newly married couple's visit. Plus, Chris Pine co-stars in this one, which is reason enough to have and hold this new classic. Over and over again.
3. "Enchanted" (2007)
Thanks to Amy Adam's lovably naive Giselle, we know what hilarious hijinks can ensue when a royal winds up in a bustling American city. Thankfully, Kate is much more savvy than her Disney princess predecessor. Though, William, you should probably keep on eye on Patrick Dempsey, regardless. (We don't call him McDreamy for nothin'!)
