If you haven't seen the original, here's a quick plot primer: Kenny's character Ren moves from Boston to Bomont—a small Southern town where boogieing has been banned after a post-dance car crash claimed the lives of five local teens. But as Britney Spears says, you gotta keep dancing till the world ends. So Ren, with the help of love interest Ariel (played by Julianne), decides to fight the rule—taking on Ariel's preacher father in the process.
While the film is thoroughly 2011 (including pop-and-lock dance moves and a few splashy action sequences), the actors and writer/director Craig Brewer took plenty of visual cues from the original—down to Ren's sunshine-colored Volkswagen and rockin' red tuxedo. "We pay homage to the original but it's definitely a new, updated version of it," Kenny told MTV News. "We all were big fans of the original. We keep the heart of the story there, but it's updated."
Growing up a dancer, Kenny has vivid memories of the first time he watched the original at 10 years of age (a full decade after it debuted in theaters). "I remember the 'angry dance' when he's going nuts through the factory, and I was like, 'What is he doing? This is awesome!' It's 20 years later, and I'm doing it myself. It's pretty insane," he marveled.
We think it's pretty insane too, Kenny!
