After an episode spent treading water (swimming pun!), Emily was finally given something to do on last night's "Pretty Little Liars." In fact, she pretty much deserves a spot on the Rosewood PD thanks to her thorough investigation into Ian's mysterious death.
As the liars convened at school to mull over the shocking turn of events, they ran into no-good Officer Garrett who informed them Ian had already been dead a week when his body was found. So unless ghost-texting is a thing now, he couldn't have been the one to send those messages to Melissa. Yet, somehow, this didn't really seem to bother anyone except Em. A well-timed text from A asking if the "suicide" note looked familiar only piqued her interest.
While Emily sniffed for clues, the other liars went about looking for a little (elusive) closure. The poor Hastings were left to arrange Ian's funeral, and by arrange I mean avoid it. That is, until Spencer (of all people) convinced them to hold a small service for the sake of Melissa's sanity. Still feeling all guilty-like for pawning off her sister's engagement ring, Spencer did a little online browsing to see how much a replacement would set her back. But seeing as she has no discernible job or income, everything was out of her price range.
Caleb (who is now officially my favorite love interest on this series), stopped by Hanna's house to see how she was holding up, only to be rebuffed by Hanna's snarky, "One fake date does not a relationship make." Caleb, we will fake date you anytime. Call us! But he might be too busy contending with his dead beat foster mom, who even though she doesn't care for him, keeps all the money the state sends her. Shame!
Aria sought refuge in Ezra, only to be interrupted by his ex-girlfriend, who totally has an agenda of her own. We just don't know what it is yet. Exy wasn't the only one doing a little snooping, though. Later that night, Jason returned a cat burglaring Mike whom he caught prowling around his property. Jason promised he wouldn't call the cops, even suggesting Aria probably shouldn't tell their 'rents either. Yep, Jason's totally crushing on Aria, but what the hell is Mike up to? Is he A? Wouldn't that be interesting...
After sifting through her backlog of A texts and a little crafting handiwork (see, Em, those scrapbook supplies do come in handy!), Emily realized Ian's suicide note was a mash-up of past texts, not a carefully penned mea culpa. Meaning only one thing...murder! Maybe. In addition to the faked note, Emily also discovered that delivery man Logan was hired by a woman...not Ian. She tried to tell the girls about her discoveries at Ian's funeral, but they only shushed her, so she turned to the most logical person for assistance: Officer Garrett. This won't end well.
Perhaps the most interesting revelation last night came from Jason, whom Aria noticed sulking in the background at the burial service. He confided that he didn't remember anything from the night of Alison's death—he blacked out and woke up with a note in his pocket reading, "I know what you did," leaving him wondering if he had indeed killed his little sis. But, with Ian's "confession," he was off the hook. Too bad the note wasn't real...
After the funeral, Hanna went to the school to get something out of her locker (okay...) and ran into Caleb's foster mom there. Hanna threatened to sick the law offices of "Dolce, Gabbana and Lebowitz" on her if she didn't start giving the support money to Caleb. Cue a mysterious envelope of cash finding its way to Caleb, who used his new riches to bring Hanna dumplings. Like most girls, Hanna couldn't refuse a food offering and thanked Caleb with a big smooch. ABOUT DAMN TIME!
Spencer's relationship with her sister looked like it was taking a turn for the better, as well, until Ian's cell phone rang in her bag, leaving Melissa to conclude Spencer was the one sending all those texts. Melissa just really needs to chill out. I'm sorry. I know she's stressed and has all kinds of pregnant lady hormones coursing through her body, but she is just too much.
Emily also got a text after the funeral (this one from A), leading the liars to the darkened cemetery. Out of nowhere, a projection lit up a nearby mausoleum, playing the video of Alison and Ian's tryst in the woods leading up to Alison's murder. Except, the liars had been seeing an edited version! The video didn't depict Alison's death at all. In fact, the full-length version showed her getting up from the dirt and Ian walking away from the scene. OMG! WHO KILLED ALISON? The mystery continues...
What are your new theories regarding Alison's death? Do you think something romantical is going to happen between Aria and Jason? And how glad are you that Caleb and Hanna are back together? Leave your thoughts in the comments and on Twitter!
