You'd think having played one of England's most celebrated female authors (that'd be Jane Austen for those of you who skipped third period English), Anne Hathaway would have no trouble affecting a proper English accent on command. But that's so not the case.
When MTV News sat down with Anne and co-star Jim Sturgess to talk about their big-screen adaptation of David Nicholls' best-selling romance, "One Day" (set in the land of tea and crumpets and hot ginger princes), Miss Hathaway jokingly agreed to show off her dialect skills. "Hello, MTV! How's it going?" she exclaimed in her best Cockney accent—a far cry from the more subtle one she uses in the film.
"I just insulted, by the way, an entire nation of people," she added in her American accent.
"I feel all right about it," co-star Jim chimed in.
"Good, so I have one on my side," Anne said, relieved.
But really, it's not as easy as it looks (or sounds), Anne told us. "As soon as I left England, the accent left me. We had to go back to do dubbing, and I had to go many days in advance to get back into it. It's not one that comes naturally."
Well, you could have fooled our Yankee ears, Anne!
