Last time we hung out with Anne Hathaway, we pretty much talked about nothing but sex. (Hey, it was necessary; have you seen all the nakedness in "Love and Other Drugs"?) But now that she's at the helm of the big, bold, cinematic love story that is "One Day," we're ready to take our relationship with her and co-star Jim Sturgess to the next level! So when MTV News' Josh Horowitz sat down with the actors in this summer's most-anticipated romance, it was time to talk about...LOVE.
Specifically, what kind of romance each of them prefers to see on-screen—the happily ever after kind? Or the tear-inducing, ill-fated, soul-sucking heartbreaker that leaves you feeling wrecked, wretched and like you might actually puke up your heart?
No surprise for a pair of dramatists, but they're both total sob-mongers.
"For me, yeah, ill-fated," Jim said.
"Tear-inducing," Anne nodded along. But she's got a good reason: "I think it stays with you longer. When something rips your guts out, you're more inclined to remember it."
Okay, that's fair. But hey, speaking of ripping out guts! "One Day," which traces the history of a couple by visiting them on the same date, every year, over the course of 20 years, is based on a much-beloved book by David Nicholls...and with beloved books come rabid fans who will go claws-out at any actor who doesn't do their favorite character justice. How have people reacted to this one?
Anne marveled, "I've had people come up to me and say, 'I didn't think you could pull it off'. They feel inclined to tell me that they really had no faith in me whatsoever."
Well, that's...mean. But unlike Anne's favorite love stories, these interludes have all ended well: "So far it's ended with, 'But you really surprised me and I really enjoyed your performance'," she said. "But I'm just waiting for the person to come up and end with, 'And I knew you couldn't do it!'"
