This week, "Pretty Little Liars" star Lucy Hale and "Harry Potter" hottie Freddie Stroma are putting their spin on the classic Cinderella fairy tale. Like Hilary Duff/Chad Michael Murray and Selena Gomez/Drew Seeley before them, Lucy and Freddie are taking the tale out of The Land of Make Believe and plopping it right into 2011.
The stars of "A Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song" spoke to MTV News about the flick, telling us that while their characters are thoroughly modern, they do hearken back to the story's origins. (The film's DVD hits the streets on today.)
"I play the modern prince charming, Luke Morgan. I am a new kid to the school," Freddie explained. "I have a very famous music producer father, and people know that when I first arrive, and he’s kind of a rock star, I guess. He likes his music and he spends most of the film trying to find Cinderella, usually going down the wrong route but then eventually get to find his true love."
"Well, the whole movie is the classic fairy tale, and it's based in 2011," Lucy continued. "So there's a modern twist, and it’s a musical so there's really great songs [by Rock Mafia]. Katie is our Cinderella."
Does that mean that Katie is basically a servant? Um, yes! "She takes care of this family," Lucy dished. "She takes care of this whole estate. She's the mother figure and the maid and she goes to school on top of it all. But her dream is, she loves to sing. She loves to make music and that’s what she aspires to do, but she's being told no from every direction. It's sort of a rags-to-riches story."
Well, that sounds pretty terrible. Except, well, it all turns out okay. She explained: "Yes, the film definitely has a fairy tale ending. The girl gets the guy, she achieves her dreams and all is well. It’s a feel-good ending!"
Is that right, Freddie? "This film does have a fairy tale ending. It's [about] following your dreams and persisting with it. Cinderella, well Katie, the Cinderella, she's trying to pursue her music and she's always getting down trodden, and Luke is the same," he said. "His father doesn’t want him to write music, he wants him to be a music producer. And in the end they both get their dreams and they get each other, so classic fairy tale ending."
Awww, how cute.
