When footage of co-stars Jason Segel, Alison Brie and Emily Blunt (along with the latter's husband, John Krasinski) singing karaoke in an Ann Arbor, Michigan, bar earlier this summer went viral, I had a feeling the film they were working on, 2012's "The Five-Year Engagement," would be something to see. (Frankly, I probably would have paid $13.50 just to watch that for two hours...) And with the trailer hitting the web today (thanks, Yahoo! Movies), it looks like my hunch was correct.
The comedy (from the producers of "Bridesmaids") follows Victoria (Emily) and Tom (Jason), a newly engaged couple living in San Fransisco, whose wedding plans are put on hold when Victoria accepts a two-year position at the University of Michigan. Which then becomes a four-year position...and so on. The couple must weather the ups and downs of their bloated betrothal, like waiting so long to walk down the aisle that one of their grandmothers dies!
But there's plenty of not-so-bummer things to love about this trailer too. Playful dialogue! Slapstick comedy! Alison Brie affecting a British accent! My hands-down favorite moment, however, is during the couple's engagement party when Tom's friend Alex (Chris Pratt) talk-sings a list of Tom's former lovers set to Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire." I think the Piano Man would approve...
"The Five-Year Engagement" trailer has us pretty much ready to say "I do" on the spot, but we'll have to wait until April 27 to see how all this, well, waiting translates to the big screen.
